Songkick says they have announced for ArcTanGent 2017, 17–19 August at Fernhill Farm, Bristol, UK. That'll sell out soon, I would think. But if I were them, I try to get a real tour out of it... First MV release from 『3』 "DeDeDe"We are not math rock, solid geometry rock is a different thing tricot "DeDeDe" MV2017 APR 09 by tricot Official Channel (03:30) Official promo video for "DeDeDe" taken from 3rd Album "3" Directed by Hideki Numata. The little-red-cube-that-could makes its way through impossible CG spaces in a visual allegory about Japan's national destiny. Or it could be just a cube. Shoutout to M.C. Escher. This song goes through a time-change on average about every third bar. The song lyrics are nebulously claustrophobic and angsty in that dear-diary reflective but borderline histrionic way Ikkyu has. It sounds like a schema for a 1am breakup call. Just quick and dirty: | Driven completely into a corner, I thought I'd turn on you one day There are no gaps, no room to move, it's frustrating Sorry… I can't accept it
[ then a bunch of other stuff, finishing with: ]
Call it lies call it the truth Whichever way you call it is fine Fill up the space with that kind of thing Intimidate me with what isn't real
I don't care one way or the other! The blame was always on my side |
裏返る, uragaeru, is literally to react with a reversal. That can be turning inside out like an umbrella in the wind; or suddenly flipping over or going back-to-front; or metaphorically, turning on someone in the sense of betraying them. The meaning of the song title is pretty wide open, except here I have to take de as 出, and then it would mean "OutOutOut". Otherwise, you're stuck with "AtAtAt" or something silly. 〜〜〜 The album's Out on the 17th of May from the band's own Bakuretsu label, or Big Scary Monsters in the UK and Topshelf Records in the US. It's a rolling release, some vinyl editions are available from the 19th. Japan (Bakuretsu)BKRT-009–011 is a slightly ridiculous limited-edition art box with "3" EP CDs, get it, (one for each member) and a jigsaw puzzle co-created with Cho Hikaru. 999 component pieces in all (333)×3 but we're not math-y. ¥4500, Japan-only and only over the counter at Tower Records AFAIK. Limit one per customer. tower.jp/item/4490164/ I think I resent this home-market insularity. They've chosen to create an extremely limited deluxe first pressing, automatically rare by design, and they favored Japan exclusively. You'd think they were an animation studio. BKRT-012 is one disc in a bare plastic case, no liner, black ink. The minimal packaging option, and the only thing announced from Bakuretsu once the LE edition sells out. This packaging is needlessly, just-don't-care ugly. What happened to attractive paper sleeves? Ikkyu, WTF. ¥1620 UK (Big Scary Monsters)Two short-run vinyl options for £15.99, plus one CD at £8.99, printed t-shirt available separately or in a bundle. BSM's CD has some printed paper case art. bsmrocks.com/products/589921-tricot-3-lp-cd-preorderUS (Topshelf Records)Several 12" vinyl options from audiophile>glamorous>plain, and a CD, and MC or DL-only options, with poster and shirt deals: topshelfrecords.com/products/589798-tricot-3Here they are at the Topshelf Soundcloud: soundcloud.com/topshelfrecords/tricot-dededeTracklist and some blurb commentary: stereogum.com/1931703/tricot-dedede/music/〜〜〜 Latest in an infinite series of lovably dorky release announcements by Japanese girl bands. Clumsy = adorable, so it's an easy win. http://instagr.am/p/BSqiceyj6V8 Ikkyu pinky finger spike-tape announcement mounting trick. Get away from me, you sticky thing!

Nice pop song, poor excuse for a release notice. Uncle Lars spent more time thinking up adjectives for soft drinks than trying to characterize the band. He just spray-painted them with category buzzwords. Emptier than a can of Fanta, and within a couple of hours that article was copied everywhere.

Movie theme by Ikkyu recorded by tricot
How you know you're getting into the top bracket. It's on the album. This is grisly with a bunch of stylish, visceral violence and blood. I wouldn't have picked Ikkyu for it, but I would also have thrown Baz Luhrmann's William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet in the trash. http://instagr.am/p/BTNzRitjFUb Directed by Sion Sono I was responsible for the theme song It is a drama called Tokyo Vampire Hotel The song title [ in English ] is TOKYO VAMPIRE HOTEL I appreciate your support! This is pretty much the YouTube trailer. Sono has been making films since the '90s. He's known for Love Exposure, Cold Fish, Himizu and many others as well as his writings. This time, it's a race of vampires laying waste to earth, again, and being battled by sexy humans with smoking guns. Or vice-versa. But since it's Sono, it'll be more twisted than just that.

Yes, we'd all like to have one or two of her at home. That bass aged a lot in the last two years. Guitar-like right hand technique, she was a guitarist before taking up bass. People love covering this tune, a karaoke standard. It's pretty, the lyrics are interesting, and nobody doesn't like a good breakup song. But the high notes are high enough that Hiromi ducks out of singing them when she can (does the low harmony part instead). HHH was webcasting on Ustream from her living room. She's looking at viewer comments on the same screen as her chords and lyrics. "Today I've been up to various things," she says, and then at the end, "I made a ton of mistakes. Shit. tricot - How to play "Melon Soda"… 2017 MAY 10 by tricot Official Channel Same recording sessions, another song how-to. The best way for tricot to get some respect is to expose their compositions and let everybody measure up. Not their hardest song, but not quite the fizzy sugar shot that shallow first-take music reviewers claimed. The way it's built is a little more astringent than that. 〜〜〜 For now, you're supposed to look at the performed-in-reverse MV on official music press outlets, FADER for instance. www.thefader.com/2017/05/10/tricot-melon-soda-video-3-topshelfLike Coldplay before them, they had to walk and talk backwards to make this sync up with the soundtrack. That's cute because it agrees with the mind-bending in the songwriting itself. BAKURETSU RECODS. Any of you guys know an English proofreader? 〜〜〜 As usual with tricot, the melody is all sung. It's never stated in the instrumental parts. Like the choral vocals, that's all context for Ikkyu's voice. It makes you suspect that the composition method is: Ikkyu writes the melody and lyrics together, and then the whole band collaborates on ways of twisting it into a pretzel. 〜〜〜 Technically, the song starts off on the "and" of "1- and-2-…", but you assume that it's right on the 1. A popular way of putting you on a little mental rollercoaster. What it means for the musicians is, to avoid screwing up, they have to be able to impose their own mental sense of the meter on the song at any point, no matter what was happening a second ago. At the end, to close the circle, they'll move the rhythmic stress back to where you thought it was originally. The mixing on these isolated how-to tracks is nice. For example, when it's Hiromi's turn, the bass drum is dialed down so you follow with less distraction. 〜〜〜 On GuitarIt's the lead instrumental part, but it consists largely of strumming on all 6 strings. The single-string lines are chords too, just arpeggiated. Inscrutable Motifour seems almost inert, but she counts with her heels. So you can kind of see by her right thigh that, unlike you, she's with the drummer all the way. Even before he shows up. On BassThe ticka-ticka of the hi-hat is Hiromi's private click track for tempo. No one else hears it. Instead, they get the time from her, until the public drum part kicks in. To start, you see her count 1-2-3-4 with her right fist so she can come in with conviction on a meter that's going to get contradicted by the drummer after 8 bars. But she has to make the mental switch at that time just like we do. You see her duck a fraction while she's doing it. Very satisfying chord at 01:24. On Side GuitarIkkyu has enough to do with singing. On guitar, she just follows the drummer either reiterating the other parts or putting harmony on top. Often, because she's got the high notes, the "rhythm" part feels like the lead while Motifour is busily adding color. On DrumsStraight 4/4 time with a 2–4 backbeat, starts off simple enough, And-One-and- TWO-and-Three- AND-FOUR-and… but little by little as it goes along, what he's actually playing gets hairier to do. The drummer has to ignore the pull of Hiromi's bass line, so he can wrench the stress away from her and put it in a more danceable place when the moment comes. He's using Motifour's guitar to locate where that should be, because it's just much easier to hear it from her. By his head and shoulders, you can see exactly when he starts counting his own time.

There's some published comment about the new record from the band, but it's all in Japanese. Go figure. Ikkyu wrote a big author's preface on her personal blog, "Nevertheless, I put out a CD." ikkyunakajima.goat.me/644a1IWg Natalie.mu published an interesting interview which is sort of accessible in Google Translate. natalie.mu/music/pp/tricot02 It tends to confirm that working with Yusuke Yoshida so much, and having him take part in arranging songs for the album, they've done some technical things they might not have attempted otherwise. They can't really write drum parts because they don't know how, but they indicate what they're after, and he can do it whatever it is. Nakajima He does the analysis doesn't he? Like, "In this part, because the guitar is in this position, it's good for the drums to be a little bit behind." I mean, he'll consider properly what the swing of it is, how to insert a rhythm. Well — since we don't understand him very well, we listen to him thinking in a monologue, though. Hiromi/Kida Hahahahahaha (laughter). While writing "18,19" the members all panicked── On Disc 2, which Kida-san selected, is a compilation of "18,19", "WABI-SABI", "Pork Side", "Pork Ginger", and "Namu". Nakajima Sempai is strange… because she's a genius, I mean (laughs). That feeling is coming out in the song selection for her. Kida We were talking a while ago about "18,19" being the most dangerous. When we were working on it, all the band members were in a panic. At first, I couldn't follow the development of the song we were writing. Hiromi "I don't understand!" (laughs). Rather than the phrases being difficult, it was that the changes were extreme, wasn't it? Since the intro and the main part are totally different, when you go back to the intro the second time, it's like "What?!"Nakajima There was also the bug before we get into the main part. ── The tempo is fast, and the development is ridiculously tricky.Nakajima What are you gonna do? It's like, I don't know if it's good or it's bad, but I guess let's give it a try for now. Kida Yup. Whether there is or there isn't a solution, the thing is to try it out. Nakajima Try doing what you came up with, if you think it's good, and practice until you can play it. We wrote "18,19" with that kind of feeling, but we got a tremendously good reaction when we did it live. Although to be sure, I wasn't expecting them to say, "nice song"… Hiromi "What is *this*?" might be more like it. Nakajima When we showcased it at independently produced live dates, what we got was just crazy. Although I think it was almost all people hearing it for the first time, they told us "it's catchy." Hiromi Our audience is also strange. 〜〜〜〜〜 "I don't understand" is "Wake wakaran!". It's a colloquial abbreviation of Wake ga wakaranai yo! — a baffled person's phrase of last resort. The logic of something is too hard to comprehend, I give up.
