I've been reliably informed that the words No Cars sounds rather like the Japanese word for Farmers. No Cars said so, so it must be true. They also say that they're all 17! They're three Japanese girls living in London. The first time I heard of them was when I was checking on the support bands for some Shonen Knife gigs back in 2011. So I hit YouTube to find some clips and loved what I found. Perhaps not the best musicians on the face of the planet, but their sense of fun and enthusiasm goes a long way. So I was really looking forward to seeing them playing at The Fleece in Bristol and hoped that they'd do some of the songs that I'd come to love. But me, relying on my Super-Human Map Master skills got horribly lost as usual - even though I'd been to the venue a couple of times previously. So, I wound up getting to The Fleece and No Cars were already on stage. Curses! But they were great and also played a couple of my faves while I was there. So it wasn't a washout and there was still Shonen Knife to come. Rah! When SK came on stage, No Cars were in the audience at the front and standing next to me to watch our favourite band from Osaka. This first song is one of the ones that I'd really been hoping they would do. It's about making tea and coffee - sort of. It's called, Do Me A Favour. www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2CiaNAR9agIf you want to see kawaii Japanese girls in kimonos performing on stage, then you might like this clip. The first song is them doing a Ondo style thing Japanese folk music and dance which is about 2 minutes long, but the other couple of songs are more "normal". You get to see the guitarist kicking a girl from the audience for their song, James Anderson Puppet. www.youtube.com/watch?v=23ywXfSs7goThis one I had to include just for the intro to the song where the guitarist explains what they mean by their song Jap Trap. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EPMBbZ_i7UTheir first album is called Yoko Eats Whales and is available here: nocars.bandcamp.com/album/yoko-eats-whales

Ah yes, I also love her attempts at flipping. I hope she doesn't do herself a mischief. Here's a rather nice vid they did for Markus Lupfer and his 2012 autumn/winter read-to-wear collection!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=i95S8JeaXBwHidden amongst the lyrics for this song is the line "Hash-tag Markus, it's a new find" Oh the tenuousness of some Shonen Knife similarities. And there's squeaky shoes too! Attachments:

the style is very similar to VERY early Shonen Knife (Pre-712**); they could really use a better lead singer though. (**Especially the 2nd song) The drummer is easily the best musician among them.

Lead guitar player can't sing worth a lick, but, she rivals Ritsuko in Japanese beauty
She does play a MEAN cornet though!

The whole video is ripping off Shonen Knife, but, in a cute spoofy way, from the song which is sung to the tune of Lazybone, featuring an a undisguised copy of the ESP video, a neon zebra and the title it's a new find (I'm sure there's more SK references, I'll check that sometime. Strangely, they actually seem to be able to sing here..... autotune, perhaps?

Strangely, they actually seem to be able to sing here..... autotune, perhaps? Autotune indeed. Pah! With them being in a studio, or perhaps recording in the bedroom, rather than being live on stage, they had the luxury of being able to do more than one take for getting the vocals "right". But then I thought them singing in the live clips was fine. As for the video itself, surely more of an homage to Shonen Knife, rather than a rip-off of their ESP video. With also I think, elements of the It's A New Find video. Especially the bit where Naoko shows her teeth - which is why I put that "toothy" still of No Cars in my post. Also their changing into shiny clothes bit seems to be shared. Here's a video of No Cars doing a song called Tuna Tuna Tuna. Which was the first thing of theirs that I saw, and they claim that it was filmed when they were 12. Really? Their "stage age" is 17. Still, if you want to see beautiful girls eating sushi, try this... www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5Q-_CrOZcYAttachments:

When I said it was ripping off the SK video, I said in a cute spoofy way, which means basically the same as an homage, but, not to be taken seriously; I have no idea if Naoko has ever seen it, but, I'm sure she would love it, as I did, the best of the NCs vids posted here.

RE" Tuna3... Cute, they look much older than 12, and it reminds me a lot of SK in the pre-712 era... but, maybe just a bit too repetitive (must have said the word "tuna" 50 times )

Tee-hee, I had noticed your use of the word, "but" in your previous post, I was just being overly pedantic. It's a great vid and I'm sure Naoko would approve,

It's really about 90 times that they sing the word "tuna" - I counted. But surely that's only to make it easier to learn the lyrics. Or perhaps it's because the Japanese are mad about tuna and maybe they'd been to a fish market before writing that particular song? Attachments:

It's a good thing that tuna aren't man-eaters, because they are bloody large, they actually dwarf some shark species

On their Facebook, they said they're playing this Friday at Fiddler's Elbow in Camden UK. They said they'll play some new stuff and some oldies like this one: m.soundcloud.com/nocarsmusic/bananaAttachments:
