Let's start litterally at the beginning, How did you learn about Shonen Knife?
For me, it was in the pages of Protoculture Addicts (An anime magazine that may be defunct now), they had a report on a concert tour stop they had made in Toronto.....but, at the time, I paid little attention. It was only a few years later when MuchMusic played the video for "Riding the Rocket" that I first heard them and, blown away, bought "Let's Knife" on a whim...AND I WAS HOOKED!!!!

I met this guy online who was way into anime...He learned I was a musician.. and asked me if i knew about Shonen Knife... the next day I'd bought out the local music stores stock... and started special ordering.
I think a lot of people will find them amateurish....but upon further listening it's almost a learned ineptitude... They play in a way that sounds like they are loose and rag tag.... but if you listen to live tapes they plat with the exact same rag tagedness every time...
Then i learned the opened for nirvana on their final tour... That is CRED IMHO
So... I listened thought they were cute/fun.. then learned.. and was stunned... then saw them live and was blown away...
Just my opinion.

I got into "Shonen Knife", by searching for some japanese punk bands. I found out about Shonen Knife. I found out that Shonen Knife was pop-punk. (I'm not usually into pop-punk, but I must say I'm hooked.) My first Shonen Knife song was "Buttercup (I'm a Super Girl)", from the "Powerpuff Girls" soundtrack.

Great thread. I think the first time I heard the group was reading a review of "Let's Knife" in Rolling Stone magazine around Jan '93. I liked "Let's Knife" (especially "I am a Cat") but was not totally converted yet. In 1994, I got to see them live (I remember a spirited version of "Heatwave"), thought that the "Rock Animals" CD had some cool songs ("Music Square") , and liked their version of "Top of the World" (from the Carpenters Tribute CD). But I think what really did it for me was when bought a cassette of "Pretty Little Baka Guy" and listened to "I Wanna Eat Choco Bars". I became a fan for life at that moment..

Here's my unforgettable experience. There was a guy asking me if i knew Shonen Knife? Then i really thought that it would be related to throwing knife . I've showed to him my throwing knife. Ohhh he laughed at me and walked out. Oh my God I discovered that it was a Band.

Because of Kurt Cobain, pretty much.
I'm a big Nirvana fan and I heard Kurt mention this Japanese band in a few interviews. He really loved them and was amazed that three women from a different culture could make rock music this good. I studied Japanese in school and was interested in the culture too. I saw a few Shonen Knife CDs in the shops as a teenager. Then finally in 1998 I decided to buy Happy Hour. It was the first and only CD I've ever bought without hearing a single song by that particular band.
Of course, I wasn't disappointed. Happy Hour is still my favourite SK album and among my fave albums of all time. When I finally went to Japan in 2001 the first thing I bought, on my first day there, was a copy of Strawberry Sound, followed by the rest of their back catalogue.
So thanks Kurt!

Strawberry Sound never was made into an Export album, if you wanted it here in Canada, they wanted over $65 for the Imported from Japan version....so I passed on it!

Really, there's no English version of it? I have an English version of "Punk Rock Star", so I thought there was. Oh well.
