I'm ashamed to say that I've only been a Knife-head for a couple of months now, but when I fell for them I fell hard and fast. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of them before (since I'm supposedly some kind of musician or whatever, also their dealings with Nirvana), but my first encounter with them was a link sent to me by one of my friends who knows I like cats. It was for "I Am a Cat." From there I went on to find out more and more about them, and I have learned a bunch of their songs on bass and am very excited about seeing them live in the coming months!
I had a similar thing happen with another female Japanese 3-piece, a band called noodles, a few years back, but I have to say I much prefer the Knife. While I still love those noodle girls, and have seen them live, the pure innocent fun of Shonen Knife will always bring me back.

My love for them was pretty much as fast, I went from the Beatles as my fave band of all time to the Knife as my fave band in the time it took me to listen to "Let's Knife" one time!!! As for the Noodles, be my guest and introduce them to the group in the J-punk-pop thread! Another thing you can do is tell us about the concert and what it brought out in you

When Lets Knife came out in the early 1990s Virgin records really pushed videos like Get the wow and Watching just that Video got me Hooked..Way back then there was no Internet in every home and CD's where the new thing still even though CDs came out mid 1985... It was not easy getting Lets Knife in any local music record stores....Little more seeing SK on MTV VH1 or Video Concert hall...

It used to be on Youtube but it was removed because of Copyright Infringement... Has Basically Naoko Michie and Atsuko on stage lip syncing the song... Was really cool and eye opening !

I was listening to Complete Control Radio (a punk radio show that comes on every Friday night in my area) and I heard a cover of "Pinhead" by a band called Shonen Knife. I'm a HUGE Ramones fan, and I thought the cover was kind of cool. I made a mental note that I should look into Shonen Knife someday. Then one day I was listening to songs from the Powerpuff Girls CD on YouTube and I saw that Shonen Knife did "I'm a Super Girl". I was thinking, "Oh hey, that's that band that did the Ramones cover." And I've always liked that Powerpuff song. So I decided that I better check them out. And I wasn't disappointed! Everything I've heard is great, but I especially love their more hard core punky stuff. In less than a month, they've become one of my favorite bands!

That's great They are one of music's best kept secrets.... if you want to hear something really great, try the John Peel Shonen Knife sessions (uploaded by our own LJerk) on You tube!

I have the Powerpuff Girls Heroes and Villains CD. I've had it for a long time and it is one of my favorites, there are some very cool songs on there and some of my favorite bands are on it. Anyway, I eventually forgot about it until about a year ago. I'm into Japanese stuff, so I was searching online for some good Japanese bands when I saw the name "Shonen Knife" and immediately recognized it. I looked into them more, and watched some music videos online. The first SK song I heard (beside Buttercup) was It's a New Find, which is now one of my favorites. Anyway, I downloaded Burning Farm the next day and became hooked! I started downloading and buying Shonen Knife CD's, and then a new Knife Collector came into the world! I eventually saw them live in November.

Here is someone else’s story, Mamiko Nakagawa. I hope no one minds me putting it here, but its a good story. I couldn't get the address of the (translated) page and rather than say go here and scroll down and hit the back button and then click on... I thought I'd just copy and paste. But it is still worth clicking on that link.

Thanks for sharing! I had the pleasure of meeting Mamiko at one of the last Los Angeles shows. She's probably the greatest SK fan of all!

Shonen Knife seeped into my American consciousness late in the 1980s. It was a girl band, and the name was magical.
But I considered J-pop imitative and doomed. Yes, penguins walk upright. No, you can’t take them seriously when they are doing it. Let the Japanese entertain themselves.
Sigh.
Eventually I bought a used copy of Let’s Knife. My reaction: nice-girl amateurs under a six-inch production hardcoat. Those tracks still sound pretty careful to me.
But the songwriting, the sound had been nailed — and the vocals, so sweet! Let’s Knife became my number one novelty recording. Ha-ha, Engrish title, pot cleaners and insect collecting. But I would always put it on when I didn’t know what else I wanted to hear.
Then, nothing; except Japanese culture opened up a little for me. Thanks, Internet!
Late last summer, MTV IGGY gave space to SK’s 2014 North American tour. No one I knew was wanting to go. Very well, stiffs, I will do what needs to be done.
I doubt it was a memorable date for the band, but for me, unicorns had appeared in a cellar right in front of me. So now: a happy knife collector, with 14 albums and a list.
I am sorry I was a blockhead. I was under a curse. Many, many hours later, I cherish my favorite group. “WATCHIN’ GIRL” was on a minute ago. I wish Michie would drop an email to somebody.
