Some tweets that Naoko posted today. "I wrote "almost" one song today." "5 songs have "almost"done. Need more!!!" "I would like to make Japanese lyrics, too." Yay! So work on the new album is progressing nicely. I wonder if the Japanese lyrics will be for the Japanese release of the new album, or if they'll be included on the English language releases. I remember Naoko bemoaning the expense of recording two versions of their songs.

Earlier today I was reading an article called, "How To Make Books - A beginners guide to bookbinding". In the section about cutting tools was their recommended list of things to get :- - Shonen Knife
- Disposable Scalpel
- Shears
- Paper Paring Knife
WTF, Shonen Knife are essential for making handmade books? Then I reread that section. Doh! Dyslexia to the rescue, or should that be dyslexia to blame? Shoe knife, not Shonen Knife! Oh, the treachery of the printed word (and apologies to Rene Magritte)...

Recently I realized that Naoko must be a second-rate journalist's worst nightmare. It's not that she won't answer an ignorant question for the 1,000th time. She answers with patience and tact, as if it were the first. But if you were hoping to hand off to her and sit back while she carries the ball for you... uh oh. Newspaper tearsheet blogged on Tumblr: Then there's this 2013 exchange with Visual KEIOS magazine:VisKEIOS: Was there anyone in particular who influenced each of you to become musicians?
Naoko: The Beatles, late 70’s Punk New Wave bands (Ramones, Buzzcocks, Jam, XTC and more), 70’s British Hard Rock Bands (Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Rainbow etc), 70’s American Rock. VisKEIOS: In [what] ways would you hope SHONEN KNIFE will influence other musicians? Naoko: I have never thought about influencing anyone. Oh my god, could I please have a child or an animal to interview next time? I don't like researching my interview subjects!

Are you implying that hiding somewhere, there are journalists who aren't second-rate? Even music journalists? I suddenly feel faint! I rather like the way that Naoko's sense of humour peeps out in some interviews, especially when she answers the question that the journalist should have asked rather than the one that was actually asked. Its like she's dealing with an attention seeking child that keeps insistently pestering her with dumb questions just to hear the sound of its own voice, "What's that? What's that? Are we there yet?" Its annoying when Naoko hands them a leading reply and the journo fails to follow it up because they weren't paying attention. Thanks for the link to that VKEIOS interview. I rather like this -

I'd like to think there are good music writers out there... Daniel Robson knows whereof and is grand master of that witty/garrulous/might be drunk thing you only get from UK commentators.
With Naoko, I think what I mean is -- and I adore the woman in all her phases -- sometimes she interviews the way she says she plays tennis. Return, return, return and if she's not super-engaged those shots just drop dead at your feet!

Naoko is a fantastic song writer, imo. She gets flak from a lot of critics because she doesn't write about what others do; but, frankly, anyone can write love songs, it takes a special talent, to write about kitties, food and shopping.

That's true. But I notice when she does write the rare love song - "Music Square" to me is one - I find them very moving and beautiful. Very talented songwriter for sure!

She gets flak from a lot of critics because she doesn't write about what others do; but, frankly, anyone can write love songs, it takes a special talent, to write about kitties, food and shopping. Too right, Naoko's writing is wonderful. The world is already full to bursting point with seething piles of cheesy love songs, steaming heaps of songs of teen angst, impenetrable mountains of quasi-political rants, festering pits full of songs about holding hands with devils and demons, and bucket loads songs by rock stars revelling in life on the road and a new conquest in every town. So its refreshing for someone to buck the trends and write songs about the small and important things in life that everyone can relate to. Who else could write a song about finding a slug in their lettuce? As lazybone said, Naoko does occasionally write beautiful love songs. Somehow she manages to write ones without that steaming pile of molten cheese festering on top which most other writers seem to find compulsory. It constantly amuses me when critics try and write SK off by saying that they only do "simple" music - do they really believe that the more complicated the music is, then the better the music must be? Pah! Punk started, at least in part, as a backlash against the self indulgent excesses of prog-rock with musicians showing how technically brilliant they were with overblown and exceedingly shallow songs pieces of "music". Learn 3 chords and form a band. Shonen Knife are a punk band. Yay! But it's even better when the critics write to say that even though SK songs are simple, they're still great. Something that seems to be happening more often now.

A comment on a YouTube video by someone who I'd guess must be a recent convert to the joy of Knife.

A comment on a YouTube video... LOLOLOLOL but this wanderer is redeemed. Some are Born to Endless Night. I mean, consider this. The writer couldn't stop at condemning Shonen Knife. He gave the finger to... an entire nation.
