On FB this morning, they announced that the band was breaking up for good Where's it say that? I don't think Haruna can say for sure what things will look in 6 months, therefore nobody else can either...

K "Indefinite break" is indefinite. Not saying it looks rosy, but they have been calling St. George's Day the Last Before A Long Break gig. They're undecided as far as we're to know. Not really smiling here though

NO CARS’ LBALB* GIG Zigfrid von Underbelly, Hoxton, London Sunday 23 April 2017 With a heavy heart and mixed emotions I went down to London to languish in the bowels of the Underbelly for this special NO CARS gig. Their Last Before A Long Break gig. But hey, this is a NO CARS gig, so the fun factor will turned up to eleven and that is a magical experience. I was still outside the venue drinking that tooth rot coke and the call came out for the members of the first band to get to the cellar and get onstage. So I quickly followed. Takaco and Tomoko were on the door and we chatted briefly then I went inside. I spotted sasquatch and a few other familiar faces so first I quickly circulated to the merch table end of the bar for more tooth-rot, well, Haruna was there. Damn, why didn't I pay more attention to the merch table? There were some rarities that I hadn't got, but was so distracted by Haruna that I barely glanced at the table. My attendance was met with a big hug off Haruna who feels so petite and precious to hold. We chatted then I assumed the position for the first band, Bing Selfish. If you can imagine Mark E Smith of The Fall fronting a band at a sixties "happening" then you get some vague idea. This vid doesn't show the full impact of what we got, just a hint... and I couldn't resist including this youtu.be/fCRY65Grg6MAfter a brief break it was time for tonight's main attraction, NO CARS. David Bowie was here in spirit at least and I don't just mean because of the lyrics to Space Oddity which are printed on the umbrellas in front of the building. Candy came onstage doing a cute raccoon dance to Fashion before a room packed with NO CARS fans out to have one last fling before who knows how long. The rest of the band came onstage and they all climbed through NO CARS magic portal. "Welcome to our portal", Haruna told us. Here are a selection of pictures to say lots of words for me, but what they can't convey is sheer sing-along fun and giggling that went on. definitely an idol bandimage hosting gifcertificity.compost imagescertificity.comfree image uploadingcertificity.comimage upload no registrationcertificity.comimg hostcertificity.compicture uploadercertificity.comimage hostingcertificity.com...and that was just their first set. Tomoko told us to go to the bar and they'd be back after a toilet break.

Sorry, I've been slightly distracted by watching NO CARS videos. I feel so guilty. But as penance, I have forced myself to watch the same two vids time and time again. It steals so much time, smiling and watching the same couple of vids over and over and over and over again. Here's one of the ones I've been watching. NC's first set from their LBALB gig. I also videoed their second set, so expect that one some time before the sun burns itself out...

This is awesome. Why does it sound so pretty good? My imagination, or did they put in fresh batteries for the evening? Takaco is bouncing, Tomoko is, well, not exactly smiling. And the coon has rockstar eyewear. Trying to make us miss them is mean. • Kind of wanted more booty in the "Fashion" dance, though • Haruna's eyeshadow like an oriental villainess in an '80s Flash Gordon remake • Harpsichord for "Zun Doko Bushi" • "Haruna, idols don't say they are cute, OK? People say, "You are cute." OK?" • "Hula Hoop" recent/new? • Stage manager / puppet master Tomoko • Can't the ascended Bowie still have a lightning bolt? Even the nameplate on the synth gets a 2-color bolt. • They went on hiatus before someone lost an eye during "I Was So Hungry". So it's not all bad. • Since when do they do "Banana" together? • "Samosa" choir practice pays off • Haruna's mistakes improve the show • The most un-Japanese thing about this band is how sarcastic they are. Where'd they learn this? Even Haruna's smile is sarcastic. • "Casio" bickering. But if you want cheesy voicing, there's no other choice...

But since you have the original, you can watch on fast forward. ...and I also can, and I did, watch it in super slow-motion. This is awesome. Why does it sound so pretty good? I'm very happy with the sound. Thoughts of angels spring to mind. Even listening to the recording on the train homewards, and with all the train noise trying to intrude, I was pleased with the recording. I left it pretty much as I recorded it, I just tweaked the audio level slightly to raise the volume of the spoken parts between the songs and I jumped on a few particularly loud transients so I could raise the overall volume a bit. Partly the recording is a result of me grabbing a decent spot for recording the audio, and partly because the sound level at this gig was good. It was right for the venue. Much lower than we had at The Tomboys' recent gig at the same venue - so no distortion from the house pa system. My imagination, or did they put in fresh batteries for the evening? Takaco is bouncing, Tomoko is, well, not exactly smiling. And the coon has rockstar eyewear. Trying to make us miss them is mean. Either new batteries, or perhaps ones with a higher rating. That Eveready bunny wouldn't have stood a chance against Takaco - and she didn't fall off the stage this time. As for Candy wearing shades, they were needed to protect those delicate raccoon eyes which aren't used to being in such bright light. Drummers are more used to being lost in the gloom at the back of the stage. As for Tomoko almost smiling, we had Sellotape and that always brings lots of smiles - even to a grumpy Tomoko. • Kind of wanted more booty in the "Fashion" dance, though Sorry about the lack of booty. I'm afraid that I only caught the tail end of it. • Haruna's eyeshadow like an oriental villainess in an '80s Flash Gordon remake Yeh, great b-movie villainess eyes. Or perhaps even a Bond bad girl. I thought Haruna's eyeshadow worked particularly well when we had the lighting failure. • Harpsichord for "Zun Doko Bushi" I like harpsichord. I want harpsichord. I'm sure it is normally more harpsichord. • "Haruna, idols don't say they are cute, OK? People say, "You are cute." OK?" ...and people did say, "You are cute!". • "Hula Hoop" recent/new? Hula Hoop is fairly recent. Hopefully it'll be on the next CD. • Stage manager / puppet master Tomoko well, she certainly pulls all the sellotape. • Can't the ascended Bowie still have a lightning bolt? Even the nameplate on the synth gets a 2-color bolt. That's no nameplate with a lightning bolt, that's the decapitated head of David Bowie. Or rather its the David Bowie mask that still gets used sometimes. I guess the mask which is just the gold circle Aladin Sane has bigger eye-holes. • They went on hiatus before someone lost an eye during "I Was So Hungry". So it's not all bad. Those food pictures of Tomoko's are not just flimsy corrugated cardboard or plastic. They're heavy strawboard and do pack a hefty wallop. I got clipped by one of them once and it was very noticeable. The last one she flung out into the crowd seemed particularly viscous. • Since when do they do "Banana" together? Banana • "Samosa" choir practice pays off and Samosa is easier to sing than "onigiri, onigiri... ...ooh!" But what about sandwich, sandwich... ...ooh? Mmm. • Haruna's mistakes improve the show I love Haruna's little mistakes. Sometimes I wonder if she practices making mistakes, or if she's a natural at them. The endearing thing is that she has the confidence to stretch herself and is willing to do so onstage. And she's so cute when she gets it doesn't go right. • The most un-Japanese thing about this band is how sarcastic they are. Where'd they learn this? Even Haruna's smile is sarcastic. So does that mean when she's back in Japan, people will not only notice the hint of London accent that she'll have picked up, they'll also be wondering at the sarcastic streak that she's come home with. A couple of nice souvenirs. • "Casio" bickering. But if you want cheesy voicing, there's no other choice... Casio keyboard is everybody's favourite keyboard. Especially if you want that truly authentic Casio sound. Dare I say it also has a certain geek appeal. During their second set we see a grumpy Tomoko. Its a food thing, and we know how Japanese girls feel about their food. Especially if someone is messing about with their Japanese curry. Or even worse, what would happen if someone went and ate the onigiri?... screen capture toolcertificity.com ...and is that a hint of a smile. No sellotape was harmed in the taking of this picture... image hosting no registercertificity.com

Tomoko is smilingOh. Joke's on me. The embellishment is a trick of the light playing through mic cables. I kinda like the concept, but it would eventually earn them a frame-able legal admonishment on firm letterhead. I bet the acquired accent lasts less than a week. The snarky streak is baked in, though.

We'll always have BrightonTill Haruna returns like Mothra from across the sea, there's this set of photos from 5 years ago, when global warming hadn't yet had its ink rubbed off, the furry creature was in charge of bass, and No Synths. After a brief sprinkling of procrastination on my behalf, I finally got myself organised enough to get this video sorted and uploaded. This is NO CARS' second set of their LBALB gig.
While a lot of guitarists may take time out during a set to tune their guitars, guitarist Haruna takes time out to stuff her face with onigiri. Tomoko gives tuition on the technique for collecting precious 初乳 Shonyū (colostrum).

I believe Tomoko when she says it's not even Haruna's rice ball. Nice testament to how much fun you can have if you give it a real try, and that'll have to do for now, I guess. To me, the main difference between this and a stadium show is exaggeration. They found their way to a great act that just wants to be magnified for impact.
