Woo-hoo, I've been out having fun! I couldn't resist going to see NO CARS at The Islington in London. Especially as this was to be Tomoko's last gig before going on maternity leave, she's got about 5 weeks to go now and she's looking great for it. She claims that it is just hormones that are making her look great, but we know different. I'll have to admit that at this gig was the first ever occasion when I've been asked by a heavily pregnant woman if I needed a seat. I must really be showing my age now. As always NO CARS were a lot of fun and here's a little taster for you so you don't have to take my word for it. Tomoko had just told us that the Japanese are more civilised than the English because they eat healthy things like apples or rice and they don't eat frogs - Haruna had eaten toad-in-the-hole on the previous day and she said it was very nice and was full of tasty frogs. After eating toad-in-the-hole, frogs are now her favourite thing to eat... Later Takaco told us that Japanese curry was originally derived from English curry! It said so in her handy Japanese edition of a tourist's guide to London. The English had got the secret of curry from India way back in Victorian times, and the Japanese people had got their curry recipe from England. The guide book says that English curry is full of frogs - or at least in Victorian recipes it was. So English curry must be the best curry because it is full of tasty frogs and is bound to be much better tasting than Japanese curry.

I think a good frog curry would beat most Japanese curry. Why does Haruna have エゲレス marked on her face?? Mama-san ni WĀDO.

Mama-san ni WĀDO.It's always a pleasure to record NO CARS for the sake of future generations, and sometimes I don't mess everything up. There have been a few complete disasters with my camera and/or audio. I'd believe anything that Haruna says. She has such an open face and looks so trustworthy that I could never have any doubts about her. Or am I being too naive? As for the tastiness of frog curry, would that be what they mean when they talk about green curry? Supposedly it tastes just like chicken. I've no idea about the writing on Haruna's face. I don't speak or read Japanese, so that is just one of life's little mysteries for me. Perhaps one of the band members got playful with a marker pen while H was taking a nap? Yet again I have been thinking about having a bash at learning some Japanese. I had a handy book phrase book arrive yesterday and a quick glance through it threw up some handy phrases for a good night out in Tokyo. If I manage to remember any of them. Oh wait, that's me thinking about Olga's video again... hajimemashou ka? (Shall we start) a! yabai nee. (Oh! That's a bit risky) omutsu de site ii tte itta deshou? (You said I can do it in the nappy, right?) oshikko morechatta (My wee leaked) denki wa? (What about the lights?) nenne shinai de (don't go to sleep) pastsu doko? (Where are my underpants?) But I'm just deluding myself if I think I'll remember any of this. No, it's not a kinky phrasebook for perverst! It's a book that teaches how to "Learn to speak the same way Japanese kids do!"

Repetition is the key. Find other children you can converse with. The face-writing says ENGLAND, or as you would now inclusively say UK, but it's an antique form based on Dutch. So there's some weird fooling around happening. Haruna, just say what you mean. I was very happy to learn that white rap and reggae are both classical Japanese forms. Shows breadth of influence.

Thanks to thgl0r for those esstential phrases. Two I will definitely need to know for when I finally get to Tokyo are 'You said I can do it in the nappy, right?' & 'My wee leaked'. Acutally the phrase 'My Wee Leaked' aounds almost like a NO CARS song, saying that, they did deal rather comprehensively with the subject of wee leakage in the song '308'!

"Yabai" alone will take you far. Yabai!!! | Risky!!! (Look out!!!) | Yabai!! | Risky!! (I'm scared!!) | Yabai!! | Risky!! (and cool!!) | Yabai!!! | Risky!!! (You are my hero!!!) |
The trade-off for simplicity is that you sound like a schoolgirl.

Awesome evening thoroughly enjoyed by two intrepid forum members, who had the pleasure and privilege of being Sellotaped by Tomoko during the NO CARS set! These two elderly punks were seated right down the front thanks to Takaco herself! I told Taka-chan that I would love her forever, but I suspect Taka-chan already knows that!! The venue was packed out, some fun and 'interesting' acts, and the event was compered by Godzilla himself, who went on to destroy cardboard models of famous London buildings/landmarks - arragh!! NO CARS were totally awesome as usual. YouTube uploads to follow in due course.
