5D used to stand for half of everything that I, as a loyal follower of The Who, loved to hate! After a time, I did broaden my outlook a little. Luckily. I'm glad you got to see Marilyn & Billy! And I have a small Lush-crush of my own, of course.

Would we have wanted to see Keith at the age of 69?
Of course... but we'd still be talking only of nineteen sixty-nine. Happy Birthday Moonie, wherever you are — an era died with you!
Keith Moon ~ Amazing Journey 2009 AUG 20 by John Bickle (09:51) A short film focusing on the musical creativity of Keith Moon. From the 2-film DVD box set Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who

Suddenly I remembered that the explanation and justification for the Rickenbacker bass in plain old rock music isn't Yes, isn't Rush, or any of the famous others you could name... in simplest form, it's actually the Stranglers.
Here is the nub. "Nice 'n' Sleazy" wouldn't work right with a fat solid-body thudding away. This classic line deserves to be heard. The entire album's here, in the best-sounding transfer I could find. See? No support from angry strippers required.
The Stranglers - Black and White (1978; Full Album) 2014 OCT 30 by Heinz Baked Beans Starts from 02:50, to give you time to clear any adverts.
Song List:
White Side 00:00 Tank 02:57 Nice 'n' Sleazy 06:10 Outside Tokyo 08:19 Sweden (All Quiet on the Eastern Front) 11:09 Hey! (Rise of the Robots) 13:24 Toiler on the Sea
Black Side 18:50 Curfew 22:05 Threatened 25:39 Do You Wanna? 28:07 Death and Night and Blood (Yukio) 30:57 In the Shadows 35:32 Enough Time

I guess that "someone" is or knows the original taper. That's a mighty fine audience bootleg! It's still one of the best shows you can go to.
Occasionally they have some bowed string sounds, like someone's playing viola or cello. Wondering idly how they did that.
Van Halen phoning to cover "Clampdown"? David Lee Roth presenting? Hilarious story, I don't believe it. The cowbell is already corny enough. Strummer wasn't explicitly dumping on Duran Duran and Cheap Trick, only declining stupid requests to play their songs.
I wouldn't say "London Calling" is lame, but the vocal is just-let's-get-it-done. After a solid hour, maybe understandable.
They played forever, an hour and a half. Can you picture a band like the Clash playing a minute and a half in the world of today? There is no undesirables list anywhere they wouldn't be on.
This is a great Sunday PM treat, thanks!
Setlist for the hellavit.

Before we completely leave the subject of drums — TC Instruments Demo - Toru Seoul drum solo (2014/12/7)2014 DEC 21 by そうる透 (06:11) This a drum solo from a clinic held at the THE Used Instruments annex on 2014 December 07. A day that will live in enviousness for drummers who couldn't attend. But they just had a second chance this Sunday. According to Jojiman, who acts like he knows, Toru Seoul is Etsuko's old teacher. Also, drum master to the stars generally. Seoul is a formidable jazz player whose accomplishment is so complete it almost disappears from view. Comments for this video are either wut, didn't get it or OMFG can't believe it. He performs under the Soul Toul rubric; his Twitter is @soultoul1. The other vids in his channel are totally worth your time. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ TC Instruments is a sizable used and vintage music equipment shop near the Shin-Okubo rail station just off the Korean neighborhood of Tokyo's Shinjuku district. They ship worldwide if you're looking for anything special.

You've given me half an excuse, so I'll just squeeze one more drum post here... Who put the drummer in a cage? Yamaha did! Or more exactly it was a team of designers from Yamaha's motorcycle division. As part of project "Ah a May", designers from the motorcycle department and the musical instrument departments swapped roles. The musical guys designed a motorcycle and the bike guys designed this drum kit. They also designed the circular marimba that is in the background. Perhaps its not a very practical drum kit, but here is it being used in public. Its a shame that the music is so horrible to my ears.

Oh for the love of... the lone YouTube commenter said, "You're playing music like a marching band," my thought exactly. A retro-avant jazz military marching band. I had to take a look at the article on MONOist. This is where I learned that "Project AHA MAY" is Project YAMAHA with the letters reversed. That must have puzzled a few people for a second. I guess if you give industrial designers a little scope to fool around, they forget all they know and just get stupid on you. Autopsy showed that the rider's neck was broken well before the crash. Two double basses beneath the floor on flapper pedals — you can't buy inspiration like that! How the guy can play at all inside that Bucky Fuller geodesic is hard to fathom. Generally, hammering upwards is thought to take a lot of effort. And there are four foot pedals. Is there a swivel seat, or is this is a two-seater? Maybe it really is intended for duets. Their 360-degree marimba would be awesome for conjoint-twin percussionists. It's absolute genius to have your player turn a few degrees rightward, and have to switch hands mid-song, to play the bass part with the right hand and treble one lefty. Oh, if he's any good he just cross hands or spin 340 degrees the other way. Plus, not only did the bike-o-motive guys give their marimba a reclining saddle, the saddle has a pillion seat for the musical passenger. Somewhere there must be a design exploration for a sidecar. And the bikes that the instrument division came up with... they peeled off every ergonomic feature from the bicycle to get something that would just look cool in a sketch. The motorcycle is a stripped racing chassis with an alien ironing board bolted on top. You could easily stay attached to that, with a skintight suit and a lot of epoxy. No knee-dragging, you need to be clinging to this thing. Don't forget to put your zippers on the backside, or we'll be cutting any survivors free at the end. This is a great exercise, but have the engineers cross-train a little first! ( ' .')
