5. Riding on the rocket This was probably first song i heard from Shonen Knife. The part "Uka boo, uka boo, everybody uka boo" made me laugh when i heard it first time. Does it mean anything or is it just funny nonsense? Uka boo means float. (and in the line "Ikou Ikou Everybody let's go" Ikou just means "let's go".) I seriously thought that was just gibberish... Thanks for the info!

Spit, growl, spit. I can't believe that you really thought that Shonen Knife would ever be singing "just gibberish". I'm shocked! I just don't know what the younger generation is coming to nowadays... When I were a lad we knew better. Whilst sheltering through the long nights in a nice comfy cave and hiding from hungry dinosaurs, we knew that even if we couldn't understand the lyrics to Shonen Knife songs that they meant something. Probably something vitally important - like what not to wear when feeding biscuits to deer, how to cure the economy, or even better, the best way to wash and dry your socks. Just gibberish indeed. I think you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself and be banished to the naughty step. ;D

With the whole song in English except those little parts, I thought it was possible. Well, at least "uka boo". I mean come on, does that really sound Japanese? On second thought, I guess it could...

And talking of gibberish, I just learned today that Coffee Berry is a real berry. I assumed Naoko made it up because she needed another berry to fit into the song, but no, it's real.

Mine changes everyday too. Many times I have tried to compile a "career spanning" SK best of Cd (or even TWO cds) and never finished because it was too hard to narrow it down. So I'll just list what comes to mind now. Miracles, Parallel Woman, Elephant Pao Pao, I'm A Realist, Dali's Sunflower, Cannibal Papaya (duh), Banana Fish, Parrot Polynesia, Ice Cream City, Riding On The Rocket, Kappa Ex, (all of the Baka Guy album, really), Baggs, Lazybone, Diet Run, Moon World... see, already that's getting excessive and I haven't even gotten past 1991, and probably even forgot about some from those early LPs. What Shonen Knife needs is a HUGE boxset (or individual "Deluxe Editions" of the albums) with Minna Tanoshiku and all those obscure tracks from compilations, tribute albums, flexi discs, foreign and promo cds, singles, limited edition cassettes, etc... Shonen Knife's discography is frustrating because it is all over the place. But I guess that is just part of life as a Knife Collector.

As interesting as a full box set sounds, I already have 90% of what SK released here in Canada; one thing I would love to see though, would be a CD of all their promotional videos (Eng & Japa), I'd buy it in a second

Very hard to answer that... I'll try to come up with 10 songs I like a lot from them, but it's not meant to be in an order of most favorite ones... but anyway:
01 - A Day Of The Factory
(Awesome vocal melody to me, and the production effects with the machine sounds just made it even more cool... when you play it on the guitar it kinda feels like the last verse is not necessary, but when you hear you mostly likely will apreciate to hear that verse melody again. Really one of my all time favorites from them.)
02 - Riding On The Rocket
(Classic, the let's knife version added to it an B-52's with Ramones feel, and watching the early home video of it just makes it even more addicting, a perfect song indeed in both versions.)
03 - Redd Kross
(Probably was my introdution to them... to watch this awesome song with that awesome video with this band scenes as cute and rocky as they are, with that low-fi sound and vintage video/melody style, made a huge impact of hapiness on me, to find such a "fresh" and awesome "new" band.)
04 - Devil House
(I don't care much for the intro, but it adds a nice feeling anyway to it. But the way they put a clean guitar together with a distorted one on Pretty Little Baka Guy version, with that awesome guitar swings Ramones style in bewteen the lyrics of the chorus and in the intro, made it really catchy to me. The horror movie theme with the cuteness of them really shines here too. Didn't even notice the similarity with the Buzzcocks song, What Do I Get?, when I heard it... I don't care, it's an awesome song on its own.)
05 - Miracles
(It was kinda embarassing to hear the meow chorus with high volume together with other people in the begining.. but I don't care now, this song is pure unique, pure SK, and pure awesomeness.)
06 - Cannibal Papaya
(Love this creepy change of aura when you're hearing SK and this song comes, the chorus contrast with the happier verses makes it very cool.)
07 - Cycling Is Fun
(Makes you happy, relaxed and involved with the song, the early version is the best one, but I like some vocal/melody differences on the final of the Let's Knife version. Catchy, simple, and just perfect well done bass line, you rock Michie)
08 - I Wanna Eat Chocobars
(Even Naoko said it was her favorite food song... the bas sline Michie does on this one is amazing well done, but the best part of this mandatory on this list tune is the daiiisukiii.. tabeeetaaaiii... sung in different ways by Michie and Atsuko, with the start of a continuous cymbal line by Atsuko is totally a music orgasm to me.)
09 - Parrot Polynesia
(One of the happy freaky chikdish SK songs with that "reggae/ska" guitar stroke of the early songs with a groovy Michie bass that is even very well produced with some percusison effects)
10 - Gomi Day
(Really like the keyboard and Michie's singing AND the lyrics on this one... and I'm not a "good lyrics obsessed listener", but this theme is so daily life, in japan at least and so rocky and catchy.. SO SHONEN KNIFE.. that it's really my favorite in all Birds & B-sides album)
