I've been a long time Shonen Knife fan since '93. I was lucky to see them on tour in '94 and almost every tour since. Still my favorite band - I love it that they keep going!
Another band I fell in love with around 1999/2000 is Pizzicato Five. I was aware of them since around 1997 and even had a CD or two. But when I bought "Playboy and Playgirl" around 1999, I was just blown away. Perhaps my favorite CD of the '90s. So many catchy, brilliant songs - it was like a greatest hits CD in my book.
I quickly followed up with P5's Matador release "5 x 5" and that was awesome as well - especially the mesmorizing "Baby Love Child".
Fortunately for me, Pizzicato Five had previously released three VCR tapes of various music videos. I was captivated by the band - especially their charismatic lead sing Maki Nomiya.
I love Bacharach '60s pop and this band obviously does as well. It's hard though to categorize their music as just that. It encompasses a lot of influences.
Well, I knew they occasionally played in the US and was hopeful they would tour again. I was mad at myself for missing at least one opportunity of seeing them at the 9:30 club in Washington DC in 1997.
Well, just my luck, the band broke up in 2001. I'm still not sure I've recovered:( Fortunately, Maki still releases occasional CDs. In fact, her "Miss Lady Warp" was my favorite CD of 2003. But I do miss the Pizzicato 5 - basically Maki and Yasuharu Konishi (who I consider a genius).
Anyhow, Maki released a 30-year retrospective CD last month (available as import via CDJapan) - that included a lot of Pizzicato 5 songs. It basically rekindled my love for the band.
I think my life would be complete if I saw Maki live - or even better a reunited P5. Maki did play a show at a festival in Toronto a couple of summers ago.
How about Robby signing up Maki and having her tour with SK? What a show that would be! Sigh, well I can always dream:)
