2010 February 27
Pasay City, Manila, Luzon, the Philippines
Shonen Knife at the Mall of Asia (free show)
A day of frustration punctuated by lucky breaks.

…took a 5 hour commute to Tagaytay for my college best friend’s wedding
last Saturday, and settled on the idea that I will spend the entire day there…
All it took was a cheek-kiss, a congratulations, and a hand-in-hand gesture
after the church ceremony saying, “I have to go.”, and I was excused.
See, I had to be at the Shonen Knife concert…

Shonen Knife in Manila
Shot from the side-stage, no media pass, no decent telephoto

6 photos by a semi-pro photographer with nothing but a Canon EOS 350D
and the suit he had just worn to a wedding.

I tried taking shots from the side stage, sans a decent telephoto lens.
I didn't have a media pass, and this was the only sensible spot I could
find, behind the railings.
I really, really tried.

Ritsuko Taneda (bass) and Etsuko Nakanishi (drums).
Naoko Yamano (guitar, vocals, founder) was already in the van.
Today had its letdowns, but today was generally OK. I didn't get to have
a super-awesome shot with the band, but after some waiting and running
after the gig (still in my for-wedding attire earlier, in new leather shoes)
this paparazzi shot, and the smiles and waves from the ladies,
made the day more than just OK.

Shonen Knife flew to Manila two days ahead, expressly to headline the big sponsored event
at the mall, and a do little promotion on live TV. It was a first trip to the Philippines.
They were thrilled by their reception.

After the show finale, there were fans of course, but also a photo-and-autograph attack
by the organizers and other bands who appeared!!! That there were so many people
from the Philippines who know about the Knife all together — people who have been
waiting for this public performance, carrying Shonen Knife CDs — it's really moving!
Thank you Philippines!
