2017–2018 promo photo debutThe Joiners Arms of St. Mary's in Southampton, UK posted the latest PR photo at high(ish) resolution, for their benefit but also yours. joiners.vticket.co.uk/product.php/1138/shonen-knifeIt's 3000 × 2143, suitable for wallpaper, or for framing Behind the thumbnail, a mini-monsterThe blurb from the Joiners looks like it was distilled from the Wikipedia page, with some ancient history of questionable relevance to a having rare good time in Spring '18. Mom, dad, this is probably not how you should talk to the kids. 〜〜〜〜〜 The all-female musical band Shonen Knife is a Japanese pop punk/garage rock band, who sing songs both in Japanese and English. Among their fans are Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Redd Kross, and Sultans of Ping. They cite as their main influences 1960s girl groups and punk rock such as The Ramones. They have also performed as a Ramones tribute band under the name The Osaka Ramones.
Shonen Knife formed in Osaka, Japan in December 1981 with sisters Naoko Yamano (vocals and guitar) and Atsuko Yamano (drums) and their friend Michie Nakatani (vocals and bass). Michie Nakatani left the band in December 1999, with Atsuko Yamano performing bass. Mana Nishiura joined to take over on drums. Nishiura played her first live show with the band in May 2001; she left in 2004. (She was killed in a New Jersey highway accident November 4, 2005 while touring the U.S. with DMBQ.) Touring drummer Etsuko Nakanishi was inducted as a permanent member as of May 2006, but she left the band in 2010, to be replaced by Emi Morimoto. The band’s touring bass player(for two years) Ritsuko Taneda had been promoted to full member in October 2008.
Many alternative rock groups have cited Shonen Knife as a favorite of theirs, and the resulting word-of-mouth gained significant exposure for the band. In 1989, Gasatanka Records released a double-album tribute entitled Every Band Has a Shonen Knife Who Loves Them, which features renditions of the group’s songs by a number of contributing bands, including Redd Kross, Sonic Youth, L7 and Babes In Toyland (the latter band on non-CD formats only). The tribute album’s success led to Shonen Knife’s first American tour in 1990, and group later signed with Virgin Records in 1992.

http://instagr.am/p/BcqYrzHl1bF In days of yore, you did these with cutouts of enameled paper made with a swivel knife and fixed to foamboard with spray adhesive. These specific gingerbread guys might have survived because they were the "B" Team. It's their cousins I see drifting around on wires in the music video.

Someone on Facebook asked when/where this photo was taken - anyone know? The Iggy poster is from "Naughty Little Doggie" released March 1996 by Virgin Records - the same label that SK was signed with in US at the time. Just noticed from Wikipedia that SK's "Birds and B-Sides" and Iggy's "Naughty Little Doggie" both released on 5 March 1996. Maybe some Virgin record promotion photo shoot? Virgin Record HQ is in LA and I noticed in Shonen Knife Land book they played at LA's Roxy in Dec 2015. I know there was a Virgin Megastore in Hollywood not too far from the Roxy. Hmm..

Virgin Record HQ is in LA and I noticed in Shonen Knife Land book they played at LA's Roxy in Dec 2015. I know there was a Virgin Megastore in Hollywood not too far from the Roxy. Hmm.. Hard one, if the original uploader has no idea. That's why throwing up pics with no supporting info is a cardinal sin. It's looks like a magazine tearsheet from around the initial promo period. But the photo could have been shot anytime after the record release, right up until yesterday. It's tagged the way the Japan Archive eBay store does its sale listings. It sure whiffs of Los Angeles and a glossy medium print format. SPIN magazine probably never had a page without type in its history. They wrote too much for that. Same for other rock journals in general. A fashion or high-end lifestyle rag would do a layout like that. The photo hasn't come to the attention of Google's photo index, and the item is no longer displayed at eBay or the J-Archive twitter feed, as far as I can find. My guess is that it's shot in California but printed in a Japanese magazine. Not much, but it's all I got at the moment.
