THE BIRDS AND THE B-SIDES 1996 Virgin records Japan SK: Naoko Yamano, Atsuko Yamano & Michie Nakatani The album is a bit of a "mixed bag" of outakes, otherwise obscure recordings and live perfomances (In England & Germany). This was a fan-driven project , and was reputedly NAMED in a fan contest. It features some covers of American pop hits, such as Heatwave, Top of the World and Brian Wilson's Don't hurt my little sister. Also, as mentioned, there's live performances of some of the earliest SK hits such as Lazybone and Redd Kross. While far from my favorite SK album, I do rather enjoy Michie's Ice cream City and Naoko's hilarious Strawberry Creampuff (The "food songs", how I love them!) The funniest song is likely Gomi Day, about missing several garbage days in a row, until the garbage fills Michie's apartment! This CD is probably more of a Knife Collector's album than a "must have", but, I'd still recommend it. Playlist(Love is like a) HEATWAVE GOMI DAY TOP OF THE WORLD ICE CREAM CITY PARADISE LITTLE TREE SPACE CHRISTMAS FRUIT LOOP DREAMS BOYS TILL THE END OF THE DAY ELMER ELEVATOR DON'T HURT MY LITTLE SISTER STRAWBERRY CREAM PUFF NEON ZEBRA LAZYBONE PUBLIC BATH I WANNA EAT CHOCO BARS REDD KROSS

Although i have every song on this CD in different form, I still really want THIS DISK. I guess i'll have to wait until USD is more favorable toward yen. I spent 70 USD for fun fun fun.. and it was totally worth it. ( until Simpsons Guy made off with it.. (( i'm a sucker))

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300](Love is like a) HEATWAVE[/glow] The first track on the album is SK's take on the Motown classic HEATWAVE, originally done by Martha and the Vandellas, in 1963. The Knife version is a little faster and bouncier than the original; and while it's not significantly different, it's just original enough to make a fun contrast to the 60s hit. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjPcjzfPSS0

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300]GOMI DAY[/glow]
Gomi is Japanese for garbage, and, in Japan, unlike here, there are specified areas where the entire street puts out their garbage (Like a bus stop for garbage); and once again, Michie gives you a little look into her own World as she sings about her problems missing the garbage truck.......twice a week! A fun song with great percussions!

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300]TOP OF THE WORLD[/glow] The Knife's take on the old "Carpenters" song; only, this one RAWKS!!! (As the young people say )

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300]ICE CREAM CITY[/glow](live)
Written by Michie, this is my favorite cut on the album (I think I prefer the Japanese version on 712 though) This song probably features the best fuzz bass on any SK track.

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300]PARADISE[/glow]
Recorded for a Mowtown tribute album, Naoko and the girls take a shot at singing with the legendary "Phil Spector Wall of Sound" that made Mowtown so big in the early 60s.... the cut didn't make the album, and was inserted into this compilation. I'm not sure what to say about it except that it is a one-time thing, sound-wise, for SK!

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300]LITTLE TREE[/glow] While I prefer the "latin sound" version (on Rock Animals) of this song, this version is also a nice sing-along song with a great beat and features Naoko singing at the top of her range in what really seems to be a love song to a tree she planted in her yard!

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300]SPACE CHRISTMAS[/glow] I believe this was originally on a special EP for fan club members only (If I'm wrong, let me know); it was one of the first SK tracks (1991) that sounded "produced"! Let's face it, only SK could mix Santa with aliens, and get away with it!

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300]FRUIT LOOP DREAMS[/glow] (Originally on 712)
Apparently, when Naoko goes into her own little dream World, she dreams of a land of fatty and sugary snacks, presided over by Toucan Sam! Personally, not my fave.

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300]BOYS[/glow]
Another cover of an early 60s favorite; written by Carol King and recorded by several groups, including the Beatles. Here The SK gals give it their all and hit a home run.....If you ever wondered what Atsuko sounds like, that's her singing lead*! *Her idol Ringo Starr sang the same song as drummer for the Beatles

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300]TILL THE END OF THE DAY[/glow]
Another cover song, nicely done; originally on the EP, Brown Mushrooms. Here Naoko shows her true ability on guitar. (Something she often gets critisized for)

The Birds and the B-sides song review- [glow=red,2,300]ELMER ELEVATOR[/glow] This isn't a song about an elevator, but rather an anime made from an American children's book, about a boy with a pet dragon. This song has a bit of a "Creole" beat (Think "Bo-Didley). Entertaining, but, no masterpiece!
