It's funny how I found this exactly two years after the obit originally was written. That's what I get for looking at my cellphone while pumping gas and not paying close attention. The 3 looked like a 5... William (Pat Fear) Bartell contributions to early SK work did indeed help spread the news of the Knife back in the early 90's along with Kurt Cobain, Redd Kross, Sonic Youth, and all the others. And "Fruit Loop Dreams" is a great song. More on "FLD" to follow... At least you look at the dateline eventually, unlike me. But I never heard till now, I don't think the news rippled out too far. "Fruit Loop Dreams" is a great song for them. It could just be a worthless bore, but instead it's such a wistful lullaby when they do it. Like a fuller explanation of Naoko's sweet tooth, same as she tends to give in interviews. Life is travail, let's have something nice for a change.

I guess my question/comment is "Why do/did they do this?"... It's an organic thing, it just happens out of hundreds of little accidents and random decisions, I believe. Same with other bands that have been around long enough, or done enough split releases and promotions. I think in the direct-to-market internet age, this is declining. But it doesn't have to. I wonder if Tomato Head knows everything about everything in the whole SK discography? To cap it, a good chunk of the Knife catalog is sometimes out of print in multiple versions IN TWO DIFFERENT LANGUAGES in two different geographic regions on two or more labels. Apart from licensing deals, there is a fan service issue. Especially in Japan, the buying public NEEDS to feel special. They really hate the idea that what they get is no better than what's released to foreigners, so there's often some exclusive lagniappe included so they feel special. That clan mentality is very real for some! And there's an unknown amount of unpublished stuff. And, Golden Age fan favors will be re-released when? Never-ish. Pain in the butt, lack of a market and fan loyalty again. You never run out of unicorns to hunt!

For me, Fruit Loop Dreams is one of the highlights of this album. A gem that sparkles among... other gems. It conjures up such delightful imagery of a tasty landscape. If I remember right, Naoko said that the song was inspired by a toucan in the Doctor Dolittle books. I love this as a live song, and thought I'd watch a vid of it, a quick look couldn't find anything decent on YT, so I thought I'd look amongst my uploads but with no success. I'm surprised at that. If I can find a decent version of the song I'll try and get round to uploading it at some stage 'cos it really is a great song.

Toucan Sam is the spokes-cartoon for Kellogg's Froot Loops, a colorful, glow-in-the-dark breakfast cereal whose principal active ingredient is sugar. It was Kellogg's play to trump the ever popular, equally colorized Trix brand of General Mills, with its cereal-crazed Silly Rabbit mascot. Pretty sure Froot Loops was a favorite at Pat Fear's house, growing up. I didn't mean that crack about sugar, Kellogg's of Battle Creek, MI. Just kidding. Don't hurt me. And Shonen Knife don't have any songs with Toucans. (Touchy about the franchise)
