NAOKO YAMANO 1997 & now Resides in Osaka, Japan Lead guitar, writer, vocals In 1981, "office lady" Naoko had an idea to put some "oomph" into her life: "Let's buy some instruments and form a punk band" , she recruited her younger sister Atsuko to play drums and her best friend Michie to play bass......none of them was a musician!! However, Naoko didn't let THAT stop her, and soon Shonen Knife was born. (Named for a brand of pocket knife, popular in Japan) Actually from day one the band was a "family occupation" with Naoko writing, Atsuko drumming and designing album covers and their father producing; even today the tradition continues with her young daughter Emma drawing the cover for Genki Shock and singing Birthday on Fun Fun Fun and with her husband playing base on the same album. Today, Naoko continues to front the band and write/sing most of the songs, after 25 years....Go Naoko!!!

ATSUKO YAMANO Born in Osaka, Japan Now resides in Los Angeles, Cal. USA bass (formerly drums) & vocals Atsuko is Naoko's little sister, formerly on drums, she now plays bass, but only on the American tours; the group now uses a "support bassist" for tours in Japan, since At-chan moved to LA. Atsuko took a break from recording with Fun Fun Fun (Naoko's husband played bass on that album) , but, has been flying to Japan to work on the next SK album. Atsuko is also SK's costume designer and designed much of their early Album art. Atsuko replaced Michie on bass, and was replaced on drums by the late Mana (China) Nishiura, for a time. In 2006 , Etsuko became the permanent SK drummer. Note: Since I wrote this bio, Atsuko has retired completely from the band, she does however still make "special appearances" with the Knife.

ETSUKO NAKANISHI Resides in Osaka, Japan Drums, back-up vocals In 2003, Etsuko (AKA Ettchan) took over drumming duties when Mana Nishiura (Who sadly died on tour in the USA, in 2005) left to play with DMBQ. In 2006, Etsuko was named as the official Shonen Knife drummer. Ettchan is significantly younger than the Yamano sisters, but she plays like a veteran. Note: Since I wrote this bio, Etsuko has been replaced as the band's drummer

MICHIE NAKATANI Resides in Osaka, Japan former bass player, writer and vocals Michie was the original bass player for Shonen Knife, and also wrote several songs, such as Watchin' Girl and Catnip Dreams. Unlike Naoko's harder vocals, Michie sang in a soft, sweet, lyrical voice and had a bass style all her own, which MADE the early sound of the band. In 1999, Michie decided that she didnt want to make music a permanent career and she left the band, taking with her, her "fuzz" bass sound. Atsuko took over the bass playing duties at that time.

MANA (CHINA) NISHIURA (born October 11, 1971, Hiroshima, Japan; died November 4, 2005) former "support drummer" When Michie left the band in 1999, Atsuko gave up playing drums on concert tours; switching to bass, in Michie's place. Thus, the band needed a tour drummer and Mana was recruited for the task. Mana had a much harder sound, as she was a very physical drummer. In 2003, she left SK to join the band DMBQ, and during a tour in 2005, was killed, when the band's tour van rolled over in New Jersey, USA.

RITSUKO TANEDA Born Osaka Japan Bassist/backing vocals since 2008 A part-time support bassist for the Knife since 2006, the Osaka born Ritsuko became the band's permanent bassist in 2008. Her birthday is July 21rst. A long-time fan of the band before she joined, Ritsuko's bass playing is very much influenced by that of original SK bass player Michie; something well illustrated by the fact that she is now singing several of Michie's old songs while touring. Ritsuko formerly fronted two other bands "Keihan Girl" and "Denki Candy*" *Along with her cousin "Milky" (Strangely, she played lead guitar in those bands)
