I have a question: How do you pronounce the band member's names? I thought I knew, but I'm not entirely sure. Naoko (Now-ko) Atsuko (A-tsoo-ko) Michie (Mee-chee-e) << soft e as in Head<< last e, that is Mana (Mah-nah)<< Mana was never an official member, but, I count her as one because she did record on at least one albumEtsuko (E-tsoo-ko) Ritsuko (Ri-tsoo-ko)<< But, she usually says it more like Rits-ko Emi (E<as in head>-mee) (or, if you prefer, Emmy< Western version)

Here's a question 'd like to get some feedback on: WHEN NAOKO RETIRES, SHOULD THE KNIFE END??? pls comment I know you have posted this over a year and a half ago, but this is what I hope: When Naoko retires, the remaining members (whoever they may be), will still go on, but not call themselves Shonen Knife. But live, they will play Shonen Knife music as well as their new music! I rather doubt it; Naoko has already hinted that she is grooming Ritsuko to take over when she retires and it would be folly to change the name; it's an established "brand" and people know what they are getting; I mean, would you buy Heinz Ketchup if someone bought it and called it : "John's Ketchup", for instance? Just as a guess, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ritsuko's cousin from Denki Candy (Milky) come in as bassist and Rits-chan taking over lead guitar and singer; with Emi as drummer.... time will only tell if Emma comes in, one day; she wants to be a musician, but, atm, she's into classical music! ^_^ (Although, she admits that she also loves the Knife)

I'm delighted that Ritsuko and Emi both get to sing (one song each) on the new album, but, I hope Naoko lets them try their hand at songwriting on upcoming CDs

[glow=red,2,300]2011, YEAR IN REVIEW![/glow] The year 2011 was a real watershed for Shonen Knife, not only because they celebrated their 30th ann, but, also because the Osaka Ramones tour (and album) brought them more publicity ( and likely new younger fans) around the World than they've had in years! I can't speak for every town on the tour, but, in Toronto the crowd was at least 20% larger and about 20 years younger than the 2010 crowd at the same venue! Naoko should send Robb Takac a present; his idea to record a Ramones tribute album turned out to be the best thing that happened to Shonen Knife in many years. What do you think about this premise? Naoko is the heart of Shonen Knife. I think it would be best if they would rename the band, just to protect Shonen Knife. Anyway, Naoko is definitely not retiring anytime soon, she even said in an interview she would be up on stage when she's 78! haha. By the time Naoko retires, Ritsuko would be like 20 years older, and probably would be a part of another musical project. And she did say that she is going to restart Denki Candy in the future at some point.

What would be the point of renaming the band, if you do that, it's not Shonen Knife and the fans stop buying the albums; SK is THE brand, when it comes to Japanese all-girl pop-punk (Yes there are other J-girl punk bands, but, they are relatively unknown outside of Japan.) Personally, I have no problem with the idea of Ritsuko taking over SK; to be honest, I can't think of anyone else I'd like to see in that position. Well, maybe Mika Handa, but, since she is reviving Mika Bomb; she'll probably be too busy .

Maybe, in the future when Naoko retires, and some members from Mikabomb leave their band, Shonen Knife and Mikabomb can fuse together into one band! MikaKnife!

I couldn't find which topic I should post this in so this'll do. Can someone tell me which albums exist as both English & Japanese versions.
Am I right in thinking it's something like everything from 712 onwards with the exception of The Birds & the B-Sides, Live In Osaka(obviously!) & Osaka Ramones?

There was no English version of any of the Mini albums (until Sweet Xmas) or either Candy Rock or Strawberry Sounds (I believe it was at least partly cause Naoko was having Emma around this time and wasn't about to tour outside Japan

Partly 'cos it seems that English is the language of "Rock" and partly 'cos, as Naoko says, studio time is too expensive for recording two versions of the songs.

And Pop Tune is only available in English. Partly 'cos it seems that English is the language of "Rock" and partly 'cos, as Naoko says, studio time is too expensive for recording two versions of the songs. That's strange, she's been doing it for years True, but... I remember reading and hearing in various interviews with Shonen Knife over the years, where Naoko, when asked if an English version would ever be released of their albums which had only been done in Japanese, she always replied "No". Blaming the cost of studio time for not doing it and also the difficulty in translating rewriting the lyrics into English. In Japan, the costs of rehearsal rooms and recording studios are very high so this means that recording two versions of every song for release works out rather expensive. This also makes it very hard for new "independant" bands to get started - hence the proliferation of idol bands and mainstream music. Also illegal downloads of music and people only watching stuff on YouTube etc. and so not buying the releases severely hurts finances. Naoko briefly touches on this subject in the talk they gave at The Japan Institute, London. Once I get this pesky computer sorted out, I'll have to upload a recording that I made of it. It's not a very good recording, but it's listen-able.

SHONEN KNIFE'S NEXT RELEASE - JANUARY 2013!!! Don't get too exited though, they're doing a cover of a My Bloody Valentine song for an all-Japanese bands tribute version of MBV's 1991 album "Loveless", it's going to be called, of all things - "Yellow Loveless". Groan! www.spin.com/articles/my-bloody-valentine-japanese-tribute-yellow-loveless?utmI'm not keen on MBV, and I wasn't familiar with most of the other bands to be included in this compilation, so I checked them out on YT. Hmm. It's going to be rather difficult to persuade myself to buy this one. But it'll have Shonen Knife on it, so... Yellow Loveless track list: 1. "Only Shallow" – 東京酒吐座 (Tokyo Shoegazer) 2. "Loomer" – GOATBED 3. "Touched" – The Sodom Project 4. "To Here Knows When" – Lemon’s Chair 5. "When You Sleep" – 少年ナイフ (Shonen Knife)6. "I Only Said" – 東京酒吐座 (Tokyo Shoegazer) 7. "Come in Alone" – AGE of PUNK 8. "Sometimes" – Boris 9. "Blown a Wish" – SHINOBU NARITA (4-D Mode1) 10. "What You Want" – Lemon’s Chair 11. "Soon" – SADESPER RECORD
