Name Note:
Su凸ko D凹koi(すっとこどっこい, Suttoko-Dokkoi) is a non traditional way to write something traditional.
The characters that look like Lego® are quite uncommon, so these guys are an easy Google search.
Their band logo is a coy hieroglyphic way of phonetically writing すっとこどっこい, stuttokodokkoi,
from 素っ elementary/naked + どっこい which they equate to 何処へ "toward (any)where".
Just to be provocative, they tell English-speakers it means approximately "naked anywhere".
The dictionary def is "idiot/fool". For that reason, the phrase gets a "sensitive" flag. If you
direct it at an individual, it's a slap.
〜〜〜
The phrase "suttoko dokkoi" is passed down in the nonsense cadences of the bakahayashi,
the traditional "fools' chorus" seen singing and chanting at festival celebrations.
The words are retained as a matter of tradition and more for their sound than their meaning,
as with antique English rhymes like "ring around the rosy".
Zoukugo-dict says:
Explanation of "suttoko dokkoi"
zokugo-dict.com/13su/suttokodokkoi.htm
…a phrase of contempt and abuse for an opponent. In the same class and used similarly to
bakayarou [ approximately "you stupid bastard" ], often when someone has made a mistake.
Although there are various opinions about word origins, the combination of "suttoko" and
"dokkoi" is common. In as much as"suttoko" means "naked body" and "dokkoi" or "dokohe"
means "to where", there is a theory that it comes from shouting abuse at persons wandering
about in a condition of near nakedness.
Related: hayashi no kotoba, choral speech, is traditional musical accompaniment to classical
theatrical forms such as Kabuki and Noh. The festival bakahayashi is an informal and un-serious
folk version of the same thing.
〜〜〜
Rudeness might be why the partial cryptography in the official spelling. But in addition to
that, the band likes little games and the kanji 凸 (convex) and 凹 (concave) not only look
like restroom cave art, they have some of the same associations.
They're sometimes called STDK for short, helpful, maybe a little bit out of date.
