Interview: Otoboke Beaver... As interviewer, I didn't ask, so they didn't tell. Perhaps a bit unkind on the interviewer as I don't know how the interview was done. I'm guessing some questions got sent off and some answers came back, some translation software got involved and that was it. Not much evidence of stuff getting fired back and forth. Perhaps the interviewer hoped OB would write the piece for her as she was too "jazzed up" to write. That's exactly the thing that burns me. How many shots at an English-language interview have OB had? How many people might this one reach? An interviewer for a publication is absolutely taking on the responsibility not to let the results be a waste of people's time and space, but what I see more and more is the kind of forethought and hard work that goes into a Facebook update. I've read stacks of interviews, that appeared in amateur fanzines stuck together with paste, and that beat living hell out of that one. Because the amateur writer knew what good was, and tried hard! Every time a thing like this passes as journalism, it dilutes our few remaining memories of what that could be. And it serves the subject not at all.

Hiro-chan's re-entry to daily lifeGoing home to Japan—! We had the greatest fun!A stop on the way. 6 hours later they were in Tokyo. UPDATED because now I know what The Japanese House is. soundcloud.com/the-japanese-houseOne of the Beavers, I forget which, took time to watch a SXSW showcase by electro-poppers The Japanese House. She said it made her feel happy. That's a bad case of homesick, TJH is far from Japanese-like. When I found out who it was, I thought that "Face Like Thunder" sounded about like Laurie Anderson remaking Toto without guitars. "The future of pop" said one guy who claims to know what that is. These faces free of MAC, I might walk past them at arm's length without recognizing. Another reminder of how distracting normal makeup is. I am in Yokohama today (๑`・ᴗ・´๑) The F Museum, it was funF for Fujiko F. Fujio Museum, the Kawasaki City shrine to Doraemon and the other works of Fujimoto Hiroshi. For children, and those who used to be them. Not quite all the way to Yokohama, maybe Kawasaki looks like a satellite of the capital when you're on the ground.

Funk bass, jazz keys and guitar, prog-rock drums, rap and hip-hop vocals, beatnik poetry… all in the barest of arrangements. Sometime before 1997, they adopted an automobile registration plate as their name. Their impact was deep, if not wide. BOBO (Hiroyuki Horikawa) joined sometime after their first album release in 1997. He brought with him a 3-piece drum set: a huge kick-drum, a hi-hat, a snare played dry like a soprano tom-tom… add tambourine to taste. If you want to leave space in the middle for the rest of the band, this is not a bad way. Besides knowing how to play fewer drums than anyone, BOBO's super-power is polyrhythm. This track will melt your brain a little. It makes the most sense to me in 7/8 time. Those video links all preview and open from here, so I dunno. 54-71 are definitely all Albinified on that recording, which covers the Spartan substructure in a thick coat of spray gloss. But it takes away the chalky taste. They actually revisited a couple of things they had already recorded earlier, to get the new spit-shine. Having gotten further than they ever thought they would, it seems that by 2007 or so they were very open to mixing it up with others who came from a much different place. Was it a drive toward more sales? Increasing boredom? When they quit, they just stopped showing up anywhere and let their fans figure it out after the passage of a few years. I found these contemporary MVs sponsored by their label. Works of low-budget genius. 54-71 "Ugly Pray"2008 JUL 21 by Transduction Records (04:05) From the forthcoming album "I'm Not Fine, Thank You. The EP that's a 3-cut maxi-singleThe real news i guess is how 54-71-ish Otoboke Beaver's new single is. otobokebeaver.bandcamp.com/It makes Bakuro Book sound cluttered, noisy and overstuffed. But the band is a little faster and no less furious. After a day with it, I think they did an amazing job getting this down, and I have a hard time imagining how you can get nuts enough to do those vocals in a studio. That's the actual miracle to me, the instruments are penned in a bit to keep them safe from Accorinrin, who is just howling and terrorizing the countryside. It's been about a year since we saw a recording from them over here! In UK only, there was a translucent red vinyl 7" for Record Store Day. That'd be an interesting have. 〜〜〜〜〜 They haven't mellowed any, it goes without saying. The new thing is generally about about being disappointed, not only in love, but by love itself — the whole miserable, lyin', cheatin', exploitin' social deal. 1. ラブ・イズ・ショート (Love is short) 02:12 2. 親族に紹介して (Introduce me to your family) 02:33 3. いけず (Mean) 00:19 They put the Japanese lyrics to Track 2 on the blog. First update since last July. otobokebeaver.kyotolog.net/ The jist of it is, Men Are From Mars / Women Are From Venus, they don't think the same way, they don't want the same things, and if women act like women they don't get what they want, whereas if they act like men, they don't get what they want. And AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHH. That last part is Track 3, really. "Listen, get electric love shock" is their advice. I'm trying to work out details, but key parts a little cryptic to me. Promotional photo for Love Is Short from InstagramNo fair, Pop has one. Pop's out of the club. I feel a bit bad, listening to them rage. I just want to say, look, it's a huge ripoff, you're completely right, I'd sorry if anyone led you to think otherwise. Maybe this can be fixed in your immediate vicinity, but society as a whole is gonna take a little while. But that'd be dampening their stoke, so just to let them burn as hot as possible and enjoy the heat?

Another unbelieving documentary shot of Texas foodservice at some anonymous grill: It's a little bit confirming that they think this is so abnormal. When TSMMR just accept it and roll happily with it, I feel like something's the matter with me.

Unfortunately those links you posted don't seem to work anymore... Those video links all preview and open from here, so I dunno. Perhaps my computer was being overly awkward just then. Or perhaps it was having region issues, sometimes that happens here. But rather than YT doing its normal amount of giggling and telling me that, "Yes, they are there, but you can't see from where you're sat" It claimed not to be able to find them at all. Now only the first link you posted won't work for me. "It is not there, stop trying to peep you naughty little boy." Oh, and looking on the 54-71 - Topic page on YT, I can see it is listed, but when I click on it, I still get...

Region block. Why do that?? I think it is some sort of licensing thing as in the past I've seen messages with that sort of information come up on similar occasions. Usually it is seems to be stuff coming from the US this happens with. Lately for me on YT, it has been happening on the YT generated "Topic" channels. But this doesn't make much sense to me as often I can find the same content on a different channel. But I also sometimes get the same sort of thing happening when I'm on film and animé web pages where it tells me that the thing I just clicked on isn't licensed for my region and won't let me watch. Again, sometimes I can find that particular thing elsewhere and so get to watch. Sometimes I can't find whatever it was that I'd been looking for anywhere and have to give up.

I'm surprised only because I'm used to hearing that Euro-world licensing is denied to the US because of its liberal fair use and safe haven laws. To which I say, hello Sweden 🙂☠️🙃. The topic channels were created to get a share of ad revenue paid to rights-holders, so it might be that UK isn't participating in the scheme or YouTube doesn't have the agreement it wants yet.

Yes, If I remember rightly, you're correct about the UK not participating in this scheme. I don't know if this is an Europe-wide thing. I feel somewhat cynical about the setting up of YouTubes "topic" channels. It has been argued that there are better ways to share out some of the ad revenue to the true rights-holders other than that token sticking plaster which has been used. Unfortunately the US so-called "liberal fair use and safe haven laws" appear to have had some unintended(?) side-effects. As you said, " US... fair use and safe haven laws". They're not international laws and from this side of the pond it appears that some US companies are taking advantage of this fair use thing to engage in widespread infringements of authors and publishers rights and looks like wholesale corporate piracy. It is all an ugly mess tangled up with large amounts of money and our beloved YouTube is deeply embroiled in it and so are we. YouTube is owned by Google, and over here Google comes under a lot of flack for (amongst other things) their policy of publishing stuff on line which they don't hold the rights to and which should be protected under international copyright laws. Then, when for whatever reason they when they won't pay the rights-holders for the use, for some strange reason the rights-holders tend to get a little upset about it and so they're forced to ineffectively stamp their feet.

Then, when for whatever reason they when they won't pay the rights-holders for the use, for some strange reason the rights-holders tend to get a little upset about it and so they're forced to ineffectively stamp their feet. Except, what better way? It's the broadcast radio pay-per-play model in use as long as there's been commercial radio. We spin your thing, you get a penny per spin, and we keep the account ledger, heh, heh, heh. Now we have a much more audit-able way of keeping book. YouTube climbed to its current height on a pile of bodies, but now that it's there, it wants to make partners of the people it has exploited, so that it can stay where it is. That's about what happened in prior eras, unless you suppose that every record cafe with a gramophone was paying royalties to RCA Victor in the days when no one could afford home audio. Artists holding out for more money is fine... except it hurts the holdout much more than the media company. I won't take your penny, I spit on your penny, I will have... no pennies!!! That'll show you. In an odd turnaround, collective bargaining is working worse than individual bargaining by top-tier artists with as many lawyers as plays per month. People bitch about Spotify compensation, but Spotify's comeback is always, "We're in a jam, here. An annual subscription is only a tenth of what it would have to cost if we were going to compensate everyone at the rates they expect based on sales of physical media. And that's not happening, because we answer to our customers and our investors, both." What the hell changed?! What changed is, radio used to be a marketing medium for getting record sales; and that because it wasn't realtime on-demand unless you were taping at home. As you all were. Still, real money was being made on consumer sales of recorded media. Nobody can make much of a case for YouTube and other online services being marketing for creators in the same way, because they *are* realtime on-demand. Why do I need the CD/DVD/BD again? The only thin bulwark that remains is a loss of full fidelity compared to hard media, and the customers are largely oblivious to that.

Nice little article. But that's last year's news, you say. Yes and no. The video linked from the story is a Damnably-labeled release that's been withheld until the 8th of this March — coinciding with the push the song got at SXSW, with private Soundcloud download URLs and the like. In fact, this MV they're tweeting and i-gramming about is itself unlisted at the moment. It's shot Spinning-Bad-Acid-Trip style in a darkened band practice room, and works something awesome IMHO. What you would see at a show if the whole band jumped into the audience and someone doused all the lights but one. Since this song has got such legs, I'll see if I can turn it into English. I'd like to know what's in the half I can't understand, too. If it's like the first half, then: sarcasm is what.
