[glow=red,2,300]Cover and liner art:[/glow] (I love this art*, it's so much like a return to the "old days" of the Knife!!!) *Note that the CD doesn't come signed...that was done by the girls, after the concert, last night!

Ok, I finally took the time to listen to this album (Bought last Friday at the SK concert in Toronto) , and, while I plan to comment more fully on it, in the near future, I can deffinately say that the girls have hit another HOME RUN with this one! ;D

MIKEY GIVES HIS IMPRESSIONS ON " FREE TIME" Giving Fun Fun Fun a run run run, for it's money!Since you have been asking me to, I'm finally going to revue this album; keeping in mind that Julie has already made a full review at the beginning of this thread. That being the case , I will keep my comments to impressions of the songs, as Julie has already made a musical analysis of the album (And is infinately more qualified to do so, than I). Free Time (eng Version) 2010, Good Charamel Records under license from Tomato Head (japan) SK: Naoko Yamano, Ritsuko Taneda & Etsuko Nakanishi all songs written and performed by Naoko (out of 5) [glow=red,2,300]Perfect Freedom:[/glow] One of my favorite songs on the CD; new bassist Ritsuko's second album starts off with a big winner here, and her bass is a large part of it's success! [glow=red,2,300] Rock 'n' Roll Cake:[/glow] The first of 2 songs on this album with a pseudo-"50s" ballad sound, this song is a tasty treat, and the "ooo ooo ooos" & harmonies show how well Naoko is adapting to her new singing partner Ritsuko. [glow=red,2,300]Economic Crisis:[/glow] Another example of Naoko's recent flirting with Heavy Metal, this song dedicated to the Economic crisis of 2009 is fast and noisy, and, my least favorite song on the album... which isn't to say I don't like it, I just don't love it. [glow=red,2,300]Do you happen to know:[/glow] A "story" song about Naoko's anxiety over losing her favorite guitar during a tour of England. Kind of 1990s SK on speed! (love it!) [glow=red,2,300]Capybara:[/glow] The most "typical" SK song on the album; simple and tons of fun to sing along with! [glow=red,2,300]An old Stationary Shop: [/glow] Another "story" song, and a good one. Naoko travels back to her youth and a wonderful old store across from her school; truly a nostalgic look into anyone's memories and what they mean, to us all! (Naoko's maturity as a guitar player really shines through here; she is no longer an "amateur") [glow=red,2,300]Monster Jellyfish:[/glow] A fun semi-Metal song that reminds me a little of "His Pet". Ritsuko does a good job here, of mimicking Michie's style of backing vocals! [glow=red,2,300]PYO (Pick your own):[/glow] Based on the English/Irish drinking song style, this UK themed song is catchy, but, nothing really special...other than the fact that it's so unlike anything SK has done before [glow=red,2,300]Love Song:[/glow] (The anti love song-love song) By far my favorite song on the album (I listened to it 5 times in a row the first night I played Free Time), this pseudo-"50s" ballad turns the genre on it's head; being a love song about the fact that Naoko hates love songs! The band is at the top of it's game; from the playing to the harmonising; this song is simply one of SK's best, and, an instant classic, in my book! [glow=red,2,300]Star:[/glow] Another of Naoko's songs about a ficticious band which relates to her own hopes and dreams. (Think "Super Group"). Maybe a little weak for the end of such a magnificent album...fortunately, it's followed by alternate versions of Rock 'n' Roll Cake & Capybara which end this great album beautifully! All in all, this is the best SK album since Fun Fun Fun (Which is saying something, having followed the fantastic "Super Group" album) and in my opinion is just a little BETTER than Fun Fun Fun! Mikey

Vinyl! What the––?! Do they expect you to encode the vinyl to mp3 with a USB-turntable or something? I tell you, record companies are Satan's lackeys. Makes me feel better about downloading, though! Take that, EMI!
5 out of 5, well it sounds like a big, bad, bonking, badass album to me. I hope I won't be disappointed! I'll tell you when I get to hear it, shortly after I turn 85.

Nice review. What I take from it is,I have to get Fun Fun Fun. I can't believe they have another great record out there that I hav'nt yet heard.I thought Genke shock and Superstar were plenty of material for a few years......wow. I disagree about Star, that is my favorite on the whole record. Agree Love songs is tremendous. Some cretin ripped off Naokos guitar?Well,at least we got a rockin song out of it. Ummm....how do you know this happened, did you steal it? haha,jk.

Ummm....how do you know this happened, did you steal it? haha,jk. No, he didn't steal it, he just asked Naoko if he could borrow it, and someone else stole it off him. I thought it was a bit odd how Nine Inch Nails were using a pink guitar on that tour!

(And even if it HAD been stolen, it could never have been me, I am nowhere NEAR London....well, not London in the UK, at least!)

Well, some of the best known songs from FFF are: Gravity Zero Gravity Barnacle Flu Ramones Forever and Southern Islands (All of which you can find on You Tube in one form or another); Along with those, there's a few lesser-known gems such as Popcorn, Birthday and Las Vegas... truly a fan-frickin'tastic album!

For the benefit of those of you out there in the cold, booklet-free world, here's a peep at the goodness that came with Free Time as presented to Europe by those wonderful people at Damnably. It makes you think that this record label is run by music fans rather than penny-pinching businessmen and isn't like most labels who try to squeeze every penny out of their product. "Hey guys, if we don't bother with a lyric booklet we can make an extra bit of money off the fans. And they'll still buy it anyway" Actually the band that the boss of the record label's is in supported Shonen Knife at a few of the European dates in 2012. He also helped out with the carrying and setting up of the gear and helping out on the merch table on many of the dates. I only spoke to him briefly, but he seemed a decent enough bloke. So without further ado, here's the front cover of Damnably's booklet. Attachments:
