I just ( finally ) got my J copy of Free Time. I was super excited to learn Marylyn from Denke Candy was now playing bass for Shonen Knife but it's really working well.
I guess the CD will be released in the USA in March... Here's my review:
The cd is packaged with a cd lyric sheet that flips to be a small poster
Naoko looks really hot even with the other girls. ( who are both really hot )
track 1: Perfect freedom
sounds like most Shonen Knife.. not really special
track 2: rock and roll cake
Olde school SK in J.. reminiscent of Strawberry Cream Puff. Naoko's High notes have never sounded better.
track 3: Economic Crisis
in an effort to be topical... Naoko sings the whole thing at the top of her range
track 4: do you happen to know
ATM my favorite track... about Naoko's guitar getting lost in air travel. Fun story based song like all the really good SK songs
Track 5: capybara
Word on the street is this is supposed to be the hit. IMHO.. sounds like everything else ( WTF Julie reviewing a SK album poorly?)
track 6: an old stationary shop
classic olde SK sound which is fun... but the fun ends there... how is this different than spooky pharmacy??
track 7: monster jellyfish
once again.. re tread of old material
Track 8: p.y.o.
A song about picking your own fruit. Fun in the usual Shonen Knife tradition. A cuter and fun song.
Track 9: love song
A fun kind of retro mo-town thing... great vocals fun beat.. on first listen this was my fave
Track 10:star
once again with the olde school Shonen Knife.. etsucko is riding just behind the down beat... this song could well become a SK classic.
Ultimately... Ritso is an awesome bass player.. she's had a few spots where she could shine, but ultimatly.. this is Nayoko's band. I'm really happy with this CD, and I Hope to travel to Osaka for the special shows.
