5678's in Melbourne (1992)
Cover of “Dynamite” (Ian Samwell for Cliff Richard and the Shadows, 1959) Uploaded by shakypam at YouTube Resolution: don’t even ask Runtime: 02:00 Rating: Wonderful 1992 live footage of the 5.6.7.8’s at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology as a 4-piece. Not sure who’s the unseen guitarist, as Rico is supposed to have left the band before this tour. Please don’t tell me the guitar part is pre-recorded. Ronnie’s axe is leaning against an amplifier in the background. “Dynamite” was the B-side of the first single by Cliff Richard with his band reconstituted as The Shadows. This is a somewhat faithful rendering. The lyrics seem messed around; to the degree that I can understand them. But understanding Ronnie is not so important, you need to feel Ronnie. In 1959, chasing popularity, Cliff had already turned away from rock music. If you think the 5.6.7.8’s ever would, just watch Ronnie jutting out one leg and dancing the mic stand around like Young Elvis. With her gravelly contralto and Singapore hostess dress. And so much emotion beneath the pancake makeup on her face.

The guitarist is Eddie a man with makeup and dressed like a woman. Wow -- thanks -- I think I love you! Because this gig movie is a fantastic document, and somewhere, hopefully, all the original footage is being sat on by someone who desperately needs to publish or at least archive it. Most democratic of the 5.6.7.8's, to let in side players who fail the DNA test. If you can do the job, make it to band practice and all the gigs, and provide your own uniform... you're hired!

As I learned today, costuming is totally Eddie's thing. Eddie out of uniform at clothing retailer Attractions Co., Ltd. A different sort of dress-up for his wedding to Keiko-san, and their reception at Ace Cafe (December 2008)

Holy Moley, I love this -- what a great ride! Omo the Screaming Chellio Panther in Roy Rogers cowgirl fringe. Somebody explain all the seated people. That third segment was a matinee show at a funeral home? This upload is in 14 segments, starting here: Once Upon a Time Part One . I don't know how much longer this YouTube posting will last, before Time Bomb requests a takedown. Seeing as how the 14th segment is the prohibition against anything except private viewing in DVD form...

So... every year starting in 2012, Burger Records has sponsored an outdoor mini-festival somewhere around San Francisco. It's the Burger Boogaloo! The Burger demographic is into garage, punk, surf, rockabilly, lowbrow... anything loud and trashy. Last year the highlights were Ronnie Spector, The Muffs, Phantom Surfers. This year, the announced host is the Father of Filth himself, filmmaker/tastemaker John Waters.
OK time for a holiday weekend in an overburdened urban park with not enough facilities. But Burger and Total Trash Productions keep piling on the bands. Jonathan Richman is playing – that could mean anything. Magnetix have been added from France, and from Japan THUNDERROADS. And some other JP band with a name like, "five thousand six hundred and seventy eight." Try to find any evidence that they're traveling internationally, or even expecting to play any date later than the first half of this month. I couldn't. Who's managing this group? Is it possible that they would just hop a plane to the US, do half an hour in a shallow dirt amphitheater in Oakland, CA... then have lunch, check out the scene, go shopping, and fly home again? Why yes, I do have definite plans to attend!

It's off to the Burger Boogaloo. We'll see if the spell that keeps me from dissolving in sunlight holds up today! 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 〜 UPDATE: survived and going back for the second day of the party. A bit disappointing, yet awesome overall. THE THUNDERROADS and French drone-rockers Magnetix were huge standouts on the Psychoville stage. Sound was so, uh... cruddy... it was hard to tell what they were doing at times. Magnetix is a drum and guitar duo that sounds like a trio. I am still puzzling over where the fat bass sound comes from. The 5.6.7.8's did what I would call a routine, punch-in/punch-out, paycheck type of set in civilian clothing with rented equipment. 40 minutes, no encores was the format. There was actually some really sloppy playing! And an equipment problem, and again some muddy sound. It was, "Hello." Pause. "Hello, we are the 5.6.7.8's... from Tokyo." Then straight into "Barracuda." For a change, Ronnie's not appearing out of a cloud of cigarette smoke. I have to say, band members looked very pretty and happy. Omo and Sachiko were dangerously close to smiling. I had to give up the idea of getting video. Between me and a friend, there was just no way without a pretty long lens, because the pit was shoulder to shoulder and swaying around. There was this one person brandishing a skateboard in the air, holding it up by one truck like a football fan's foam finger. Cultural exchange notes: Ronnie made a point of saying how honored the band was to meet John Waters in person. Hey Omo, how do you say "proud" in English? I suppose it made some impression on them that entry to the platform was through an inflatable red vinyl vagina 8 feet high. The Mummies closed the day on the Fleshland stage, with their trademark "watch this, I do not give a rat's ass!" swagger. That was fine. 5.6.7.8's got to start and leave on a home-like schedule, and the Mummies drove the audience literally insane for a while. THUNDERROADS bassist Jesus was taking notes from the wings.

In addition, guest participation by quartet-era member Rico Jett-san, with Kummy-san of Mutant Monster Beach Party. 😭 I also love the quartet-era group before going the garage route, so to be sure, seeing the day when the group of four were assembled I seriously felt such happiness 😭 Thank you so much 😭 and congratulations on your 30th anniversary 🎉✨ Incidentally, I was the only woman at the front of the audience ♪ a woman admiring women.

Prequel clip from the same show: the sonics nuits sonores 2011 special 5678'S2016 OCT 17 by basicdemo (14:10) ©cabinboy2011LyonTwo minutes of added interest, as the Sonics get some unexpected go-go dancers for their cover of "Louie Louie" (approx. 10:00–12:00). The 5.6.7.8's introduced their support and have been waiting their turn, but decide to help them finish big. Possibly urged on by their translator Koshiko, the woman doing the swim at center stage in blue jeans with a maize top. She's the one they got to communicate their little joke about singing the next song "in French, especially for you" (when they were about to do "Woo Hoo"). I saw no sign that the audience was actually amused by that, but I thought it was a witty joke on the band and audience both at once.

Rico Jett at the 30th Anniversary Halloween BallIt wasn't long before she lost the pirate hatBlog post about the eveningnpnlricco.cocolog-nifty.com/blog/2016/11/the-5678s.html Thanks very much to all the guests who came to see the 5678's 30th anniversary show the other day!
Anyway, it was fun! While the 10th anniversary and the 20th anniversary were fun, maybe because I've discovered a few things that weren't apparent to me in my younger years, this time was even more fun!
When we were young together, working hard on the band through trial and error, it was lots of fun and I learned a lot, but there were other possibilities and I went the way of doing the music I wanted to do on my own.
But I was always a band player, and I always respected the members of the 5.6.7.8s.
With 5678's vocalist Yotchan, we made a lot of records, listened to a lot of music together, practiced a lot together, played a lot together.
And once, when I quit music, she made an opportunity for me to become active again. To thank Yotchan that RICO JETT is in a band today is no exaggeration (w).
But later, getting up on stage with them after such a long time was d-r-e-a-d-f-u-l, that's why I practiced my guitar (w). Of course I play guitar all the time, so by practicing madly I was able to make myself a little bit happy (w).
Then, while I might have been thinking about things like song structure and running over my solo until I went on stage, when I eventually got up there I turned into the usual RICO JETT (*wry smile*).
After all, I am who I am (w). As a band The 5678's will always impact my musical life!
Heartfelt congratulations on the 30th anniversary! It might be trite, but — keep on rocking!Temporary scrapbook wall at the club on Facebook: facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=3065645996792636&set=pcb.3065646620125907&type=3&theater She posted this photo collage from MySpace with the comment, "My precious time!"
