Let's say that men from another planet came to your town to sightsee, what would you show them? What makes the place where YOU live , UNIQUE?For me , the obivious answers are the channels (old and new ) of the Welland Canal...from the lift bridges, to the tunnels and aqueducts, to the ships that travel the canal; the scale and magnitude of the venerable public work are something to awe the visitor. while ships no longer travel through the channel that virtually splits Main st into East and West sides (The present canal, now skirts the farmland, to the east of the city), the giant lift bridge that has united them since 1930* still stands at more than 150 feet. (Though, it no longer raises and lowers to lets ships pass underneath) Other features are the achitecture of both the older homes and the lovely new library. Also, within an hour's drive are Niagara Falls, the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake and both lakes Erie, and Ontario. (The canal is actually used to connect the two lakes, as ships rarely like going down waterfalls....much less up them!) *The Main street of the city has been divided by the canal since 1829... bridge 13, is the successor to the earlier bridges. The modern channel to the east of the city, has no bridges, having 2 tunnels under the canal, instead.YOU CAN SEE SOME VIEWS OF WELLAND AND THE CANAL HERE: shonenknife.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=offtopic&action=display&thread=23
