Wednesday Campanella 水曜日のカンパネラ(すいようびのカンパネラ, Suiyoubi no Campanella) 2016 June 26 at Studio COAST - Noboru Miyamoto photo for Entertainment StationFrom about 2012, when they began to appear on YouTube, a Japanese electronica unit. They're not actually that hard to understand. The development concept was, a song & dance trio with heavy production support — like Perfume — except folkloric instead of futuristic. They've stuck to that, choosing themes from pop history, internet legends and children's stories. From these materials, they make their own myths. Simple as that. The plan was for a trio of girl performers. Along the way, the other two dematerialized. They were not needed at all, because Wednesday Campanella turned out to resemble Perfume only as a creative strategy, not as an act. There's no elaborate choreography, no ultra-high-tech trans-human imagery, and no pin-up sexy with hemlines waist-high. Instead, you get slacker sophistication. Leading street fashion, an eclectic mix of crunchy-granola soulfulness and digital production tricks, and originality. Sometimes I wonder where they get it from. WedCamp's genre is (usually) laid-back hippy-hoppy, poppy house trax with a techno composition philosophy. That means anything anyone has ever heard is material. KOM_I's usually thin, sweet vocals go back and forth between sing-songy and shouty, separated by monotone Japanese rappery. 〜〜〜〜〜 WedCamp is three remarkable talents. One audio/video/image/everything producer and digi-wizard, who strongly prefers to be faceless. But still has a face to feed, so — gotcha. Dir.F at lunchOne composer/songwriter/arranger, who had a career before he signed up for WedCamp. Kenmochi HidefumiOne performer/front/face. She now concepts, writes and music-directs too. KOM_I (コムアイ, KOMAI; born KOSHI Misaki)NamesWhen the former Misaki Koshi was thinking up a Twitter handle, she acronymed herself (KO–shi)+(MI–saki) = KOMI, but that's not cool enough, so — KOM_I, pronounced "komAI". Why? It's the right kind of English/internet status symbol, but it also avoids some important problems. Such as, having your stage name rhyme with "gomi" (garbage) or "–komi" (all-purpose suffix for "included"); also, the trademark problem is simplified. 〜〜〜 All along, the group had been going by " Suiyoubi no Campanella" until their 2016 SXSW appearance, when they switched to "Wednesday Campanella" for non-Japanese audiences. 水曜日 | suiyoubi | Wednesday, the regular weekly team meeting day

I've never heard what they were thinking with "campanella". Was it… - Campanelle, the cute Italian pasta, or
- Campanella, the beautiful/creepy mushroom genus, or
- The highfalutin US handmade instrument maker, or
- Paganini's rondo for violin that Franz Liszt turned into a ridiculous piano étude*, or
- The LA Dodgers baseball hall-of-fame third baseman, or
- The 2011 Miss USA, or
… or what? WEDNESDAY FOR THURSDAY/FRIDAY
Photos are from the September 16 show at Odaiba Shiokaze Park These are mixes, not playlists, so there's adulteration. It's OK. Just throw them on and go about your business. If you don't already know the music they'll explain it, and after an hour you'll love it or hate it. No slideshow, javawock's into sounds, not pictures. KOM_I intellectual history
Dramatic with a folio, a bag of cookies from the cafe, and a golden fingertip applianceKOM_I comes from the highly industrialized Fujisawa area, which extends to the waters of Sagami Bay across from the tourist destination of Enoshima Island. It's where high-tech manufacturing collides with surf-bum beach culture and environmental preservation. Went to college at her local school, which happens to be the Shonan Fujisawa Campus of prestigious Keio University. She graduated from the Faculty of Environmental and Information Studies. I had to look that up. That academic department covers everything from product, fashion and user interface design to design for urban environments to genomics to systems biology to sports performance and ergonomics. Interdisciplinary, every buzzword is covered. And she thought that after that, she was going to get a regular job somewhere. Interests: Storytelling, {and lots of other stuff} Strengths: Taking apart deer Weaknesses: Waking up in the morning (low blood pressure) She's a bit dangerous as a performer. Table-flipping relates to one of their songs, so when she did it at a Tower Records in-store she naturally turned over a table. She's also bare-handedly butchered a deer carcass, hair and hide on, more than once ** — because, as she said, she wanted the audience to experience what animal foods mean. There are photos out there of her tearing the deerskin off a raw, bloody foreleg with both hands. Then they served the audience small plates of venison, which is a trendy dish in Japan. How's this for shamanic?KOM_I was once investigating a career in agriculture, including pig farming. According to legend, this took her to Hokuto in Yamanashi Prefecture, where she sought training in self-sufficiency (how she is supposed to have acquired her knowledge of deer deconstruction). ___________________________ ** 2X that I know of: Candy Apple Music Festival 2013 〜Wednesday Campanella Volume〜 2013 November 4, Moon Celebration, Shibuya WWW ototoy.jp/news/74488Shinjuku LOFT 2015 FEB 08 expertmode.blog25.fc2.com/blog-entry-4829.html

Managers Yasutomo Fukunaga Ami Yamamoto
A&R Shinobu Yokose Kyohei Tominaga
Starring ANU KOM_IYou may find this as confusing as I did, but I tried to work it out. Fairly, they gave 18 year old ANU the top appearance credit, even though she's an unknown, last-minute stand-in for a circus star grounded by injury. ___When the MV opens, ANU is meditating grimly in Mongolian, with subtitles: とにかく 私は走らないといけないのだ 不確かなものに犠牲を私う その行為だけが確かなのだ もう ここにはいられない こどもの私が 離れていく 振り返る時間は ない | Tonikaku watashi wa hashiranai to ikenai noda Futashikana mono ni gisei o watashi u Sono koui dake ga tashikana noda Mou koko ni wa irarenai Kodomo no watashi ga hanareteiku Furikaeru jikan wa nai | It's no use anyhow, if I can't run I will be a living sacrifice to uncertainty That act alone is certain I can't stay here anymore As for the children, I'll leave them There's no time to look back |
Can't stand this feeling of being hemmed in, I am a proud nomad! And it's off to nowhere looking for nothing, standing in the stirrups. Teenagers, geez. ___
With the main title, we snap back to the earlier start of the story. Here's KOM_I slacking as usual, having a nap in a dry, dusty wind on the hood of her broken down 4x4. Waiting for the Inner Mongolian Motor Club to send a tow. ___K encounters a much less burned-out version of A, who becomes her special tutor in the Way of the High Desert. Good times, cultural exchange, friends forever. Then it's back in the saddle, because WE ARE MONGOLS. ___After many groovy nomadic miles, we've made it to present time. ANU's not enjoying her journey as much as expected. KOM_I has a shamanic vision of her friend and mentor getting craned out of her saddle. The bosom buddies are apart but still joined. Wait up ANU, I'm-a come getcha with my psychic skillz! ___
Things deteriorate against a backdrop of lounge-y vibes and happy flashbacks. All-seeing KOM_I gets a clue. Out with the circus streamers! Where else would ANU go, but the dirty dead Chinese jeep of her BFF? Actually, it's the horse that decides to return to the vehicle, since ANU is not feeling well. Found, collected, hugged — here, you need to take better care of those chapped lips. ___
Modern nomad ANU is not going back to her old life, but at least she's not dead in a ditch, and with KOM_I for company she's already got her start in show business. ROLL CREDITS, which are like for a feature film.

All right for openers, but where in the heck did that come from? This is WedCamp, so there's a fable, AND there's a tie-in to big money because remote location spectacles with 100 horses, 100 local actors, and 100 cast and crew don't shoot themselves. The commercial collaboration is with the Japan Racing Association, timed to fit the promotional schedule of the 84th running of the Japan Derby at the Tokyo Racecourse. This is as low-cost as a nationwide broadcast can getThere was a special WedCamp concert dubbed "Time to Play" held on the 10th of last month at the deserted racetrack, for nobody but the Internet. It was a Wednesday. A lot of people who have never been to the races in Tokyo are now familiar with the location and layout of the horse track, and are thinking, horses running is cool. Fuji TV might have kicked in something for something. Their photo. To give this added depth, we need more horse worship. Now where in Asia do people still revere a good horse? Oh, right. This also works to keep eco-freak KOM_I engaged with the project. You saw me with the golden eagle yesterday morning? Sharp feet on those. The MV project got tagged "Time to Pray" and they loaded it up with cant about nature's magnificence, as well as many special promotions. Usually with creative projects, the idea comes before there's a project. How else do you know what the project needs, or even if there is one? I don't know which came first with the producers, the thought of doing "Melos" or the thought of working with the JRA, but it is a long, long day's ride from the song's original source material to the Mongolian plains. To start, the story is an antique, originally Greek (?) fable recorded by a Roman author in what became known as the Fabulae of Gaius Julius Hyginus, when he was "an ignorant youth, semi-learned, stupid" in the estimation of one modern editor. It's OK to talk trash about dead people in editor-land. Ca. First CenturyGAIUS JULIUS HYGINUS: QUI INTER SE AMICITIA IUNCTISSIMI FUERUNT www.thelatinlibrary.com/hyginus/hyginus5.shtml 1300 words, maybe not all of them the best chosen. "Harmodius and Aristogiton" is another kill the king buddy story, so it's thrown in as a twofer. Whatever its literary merits, the Moerus and Selinuntius story sticks with people. Translated into English by R. Scott Smith and Stephen M. Trzaskoma. Available in print from the publisher and fine booksellers. Real quick: In Sicily of old, simple but sturdy lad Moerus gets caught trying to assassinate evil tyrant Dionysius, a king who's taken to repressing his innocent subjects by torturing and killing them. Moerus says, fine, you got me, execute me — but I need three days to wrap things up at home. Let me go, I'll be back for the crucifixion. That's actually OK, if friend Selinuntius stays on as hostage. He'll be hung instead, if Moerus isn't back on time. Rats, there's a delay on the return trip. The executioner is sick of waiting, but Selinuntius refuses to be killed until the 9th hour of the appointed day, because Moerus is probably just stuck in traffic, relax I know he'll be here. And Moerus makes it at the last minute!!! The king is so awed by this coolness that he stops being evil for a minute and pardons Moerus for trying to kill him. The End. 18th CenturyFriedrich Schiller: "The Hostage, a Ballad"
Re-published in translation for the Project Gutenberg e-pub, Friedrich Schiller, Poems of The Third Period. Scroll up from the link to footnote 37. Another guy who felt Hyginus hadn't done justice to a knockout story, Schiller adds some dramatic embellishments of his own. His King Dionysius is a gloomy s.o.b with a cruel sense of humor. Sundown on the 3rd day is now explicitly the comeback deadline. Moerus has to deal not only with an impassable flood but robbers in the forest. He's super late, and HE HAS TO RUN for all he's worth, ignoring passersby who warn him it's all over. Just as the roofline of Syracuse is in sight, Moerus meets another new character, the trusty herdsman Philostratus, who gives him the worst advice — GIVE UP, YOU'RE TOO LATE, SAVE YOURSELF. (Schiller reworked the deal so that the hostage's life doesn't pay for the original crime.) Moerus is like, shut up, I don't care, I'm going because I said I would; and he runs on, and… he makes it just at sundown. Good job everybody, you're free. Go home. Commentators including Goethe have argued that Schiller's version is diminished in that it contains some ridiculous nonsense. True. The story is still waiting for somebody to do it right. Mid-20th Century (1940)Osamu Dazai: Hashire, MEROSU! (Run, Melos!)Dazai is a fan of German poetry including Schiller's, and he's moved by the trope of running to redeem your friend's life and your own worthiness, no matter the cost. So, unencumbered by a verse form, he writes a modern version that stresses Melos's struggle not only with obstacles in his path, but also his own weakness, self-interest and self-doubt. Satan-like, King Dionysus offers a toxic escape clause. Now the key issue is: Melos, are you worthy of trust? Dazai's runner casts away everything but the will to get there. Double win! Also the first re-telling with spiffy dialogue, more fully-drawn characters, a real sense that Melos and Selinuntius are closer than brothers… and a comedy finish.
Selenuntius' apprentice: Forget my master, it's too late for him"Stop! Don't run! Your own life is what matters now… even though the King mocked him, he said Melos will surely come. He seems to have unshakeable faith in you." Osamu Dazai — I mean, Melos: That's totally not the point"That's why I'm running. I'm running because of the faith he has in me. Whether I come in time isn't the question. Any cost is acceptable, even my life. I, I am running for the sake of something more terrifyingly great. Follow me!" Selenuntius' apprentice: Melos, you are scaring me"Aaaa — have you lost your mind? If that's how it is, run with all your might . Maybe it could be that you're in time. Run! The sun has not yet set.
Hashire, MEROSU! in Japanese (3 parts)www.geocities.co.jp/HeartLand-Gaien/7211/Japanese/melos1j.html Run, Melos! in plain, not 100% accurate English (3 parts)www.geocities.co.jp/HeartLand-Gaien/7211/kudos16/melos1.htmlRun, Melos! in fancy, not 100% accurate English rawrvolitans.wordpress.com/2011/06/23/run-melos-osamu-dazai/Rawrvolitans created a blog apparently for the sole purpose of posting a translation. Just be aware that there's some Western fairy tale frosting on this dorayaki. Run, Melos! background and spinoffsen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run,_Melos! 〜〜〜〜〜 I don't know, but I see it said that Dazai wrote his story as an inspiration to youth. It does seem like that. Regardless, it's ingrained in the Japanese school curriculum. So it's immanently usable material. WedCamp even grabbed some language verbatim from the book, for the nostalgia value. All it needs is a fresh visual spin, a fresh spin… Melos, you're a racehorse now, OK? Run your heart out. Selinuntius, you're Melos' trainer. You have that bond, right? Philostratus, you can be the track insider everyone goes to for tips. Dionysius, you're still a wicked king. Sorry, babe, but politically we can't update you. 〜〜〜〜〜 Next: the bloody song lyrics

So we don't forget what this is about, it's this: Wednesday Campanella official MELOS MV at YouTube Musically, the song follows the rootsy electro format chosen for WedCamp. They write to make use of KOM_I's airy soprano and gabby hipster vibe. We're dealing with some hip-swinging samba over laughable hiphop speed beats. All the drama comes from honking horns and thumping tympani. Most of the time, RUN MELOS sounds more like, BE CHILL MELOS, LOOK GOOD GETTING THERE. I haven't seen anyone claiming the lyrics outright. If KOM_I wrote them all herself... that's pretty good and it took research, too. Of course, this is a mish-mash of traditional imagery and horse-race stuff. Like watching two TV channels at once. We have a client to please. I have the feeling of the true animal natureI re-sectioned the song text into blocks that follow changes in the music. Not exactly like they published it. Hashiridase MEROSU | English translation
Tyrant king, studied in wickedness Even Dionysius holds his breath The manner of that finish, seen from the paddock Believe me, in the Fuji viewing stand There's no choice but to watch
A faith beyond friendship The horse trainer Selinuntius Day after day spent at the stable The ranch, and the stall
Ten times faster than the setting sun Running like a black wind As he turned the final corner The towers of Syracuse came in sight
Start running, Melos No expectation of winning Nothing but the life force
Start running, Melos No matter what, this is the end The gods, too, see it clearly
The Favorite; the Antagonist The predictions of Philostratus The data collector have dried up It's not easy for the track man Gathering news in the training center
A nose; a head; a neck — delicate margins The three year olds' showdown at the summit Make it a wide margin if possible I want to win by ten horse's lengths
Ten times faster than the setting sun Running like a black wind As he turned the final corner The lamps of Syracuse came in sight
Start running, Melos No expectation of winning Nothing but the life force
Start running, Melos No matter what, this is the end The gods, too, see it clearly
Start running, Melos

Not as far-fetched as the concept sounds on first consideration. I read somewhere that laser-based track-and-field timers accurate to 1/10,000 sec have not caught on with the tradition-bound horse racing set. They use automated timing, but still rate close finishes in terms of rough physical measures decided by photography as necessary. There's a bit of the kind of cute writing you can do in Japanese. The literal meaning of SHIRAKUSU no tourou depends on what kanji you choose for tourou. Choose 塔楼 and it's an obscure term for a tall structure like a steeple or a watchtower. If you go with 灯篭 instead, tourou is the kind of hanging lamp or pedestal lantern that's familiar from traditional Japanese gardens and temple precincts. So the song lyrics exploit this accident to make you more aware that as the minutes pass, the sun is getting lower. But you can't realize they're doing it without the written text. To see the kanji, you can visit the PRAY side of the special project website and scroll down to get text with explanatory links about horse racing terms and customs.

KOM_I heavies upPlus some commercials Last Airbender costume party, everyone! http://instagr.am/p/BW0AK-BDTL- Bunta-kun's Bodhisattva feeling, sez ___8kura___. It's a grape drink and halter-top sort of Bodhi wisdom that Bunta-kun has got. 7 year old KOM_IOn 7–5–3 Day, 18 years ago http://instagr.am/p/BW0Nh3dDzDP I celebrated a birthday. I have experienced this world for a quarter-century.
I detest getting older. I wonder if it's because I shrink from the greater mission imposed. If possible, welcome the adult years joyfully.
How is there any great mission in nothing more than simply being alive? The taste of food, the tickling of a breeze, the happiness of falling asleep, having a sneeze, it's good because of these things.
Although they are good, the happiness of being 19, the flavor of life on a farm without making money... since it was boring once I had done with it, and saying that I'll come back someday, from there began the dance of mission and desire in Tokyo.
Not that anyone said so, but a life of leisure is pointless.
Finding meaning in a meaningless whole, sharpening the senses, occasionally being able to share the different atmosphere with someone — and to be serious, it was quite different after all — all that notwithstanding, if I hadn't done as I did, I would have died from leisure time.
If you try nothing, it follows that you get nothing.
What's interesting is that there's no true meaning. There being no great duty or obligation therefore, the only certainty is that nevertheless we are alive. This may show that Albert Camus is still being read in Japanese, or that KOM_I really took the subtext of MELOS to heart. 〜〜〜〜〜 HB2UThey expect a performance, so they by god get one http://instagr.am/p/BW769VJjWdx KOM_I chose pink plaid drapes and a long-sleeve nude top with tattoo flash appliqués for this scene. http://instagr.am/p/BW77IXYD2BC 〜〜〜〜〜 How we pay the bills around here: http://instagr.am/p/BW7bY3bDJs9 visit us 🌈 🌈 🌈 gogowednesday.com/Free international shipping if you buy 3 while quantities last. http://instagr.am/p/BW5Z9yfDW2e Budokan Blu-ray, 100 photos included 💁 💓 There's a making-of too!

I took her home with me when I got back. At home, she rested on the back of a Gameboy Advance, wandered around a light bulb. Since she hasn't got much time left, should I take care of her?I think the turbaned emoji head might be her shout-out to Jainism, but she made the emoji guy rather light-skinned, so — nordic Jains specifically.

Why there's only one Wednesday CampanellaKOM_I got back from eclipse-festing in Oregon all full of energy. All the photos are from her Instagram account, for which post embedding just doesn't work. I will perform live on Instagram from the beach of a fresh oyster farm starting from 5:30 pm⛺️ 👋 There are no spectators, so please check this [ IG ] account 🦀 💭 #rebornartfestival The eye makeup didn't stay onAfter the festival was over for the day, she did as she said, barely wearing a bunch of balloons and the persona of some kind of glowing orange undersea thing. A boiled crab, if you believe her emoticons. KOM_I plain and KOM_I fancyThe deal with KOM_I is that she's just about as good in the empty dark with a couple of cold staring lenses as she is before a vibing arena crowd. That is some kind of incomprehensible performance voodoo. Björk should be this good with a getup costing thousands. Without KOM_I, the beach was this, a chilly, dank, rocky patch of sand on an ocean bay at the edge of a scrubby wood: http://instagr.am/p/BYqfagFgsG0 With KOM_I, it's this, a weird improvised fairyland that's moving for its simplicity and originality alone.

For someone who's publicly so take-it-or-leave-it about her career, she's remarkably serious about performance. I mean, this is just silly, except that KOM_I is in it and that changes things. It's not her vocals, believe me. It's a quality of personality, like faith in herself and whatever's going on. The show is a live modeling shoot as much as a musical performance. Not spraining an ankle must have been in the backs of some minds. The plastic balls knocking around are floats for oyster bags, nets and/or channel marking. Kind of a planned-for given that the balloon costume is going to disappear substantially after rolling around on a pile of oyster shells. That doesn't really phase KOM_I too much. As we go along, it's more and more just the talent in a pair of boots, blinded by spotlights, dressed in popped balloons, doing whatever she can find to do for the camera. Even the sound mix changes to be more ambient, less recorded. The festival site is a rural area prominent mainly for aquaculture. Reborn-Art is taking it a bit upscale.
