If only Risa knew what a "Jim Dandy" is she wouldn't be using that as a stick bag. I'm sure she will figure it out soon enough on this tour. It starts tomorrow!! If I get a drive delivery going to San Diego area tomorrow I'm going to stick around and go see them for opening night, then for sure Wednesday in LA. Heck, if I get a drive job to the Bay area I'll see them with the invisible Dick Dale! Awww... who'd be mean enough to tell her anything like that about her present? Not me. James Mangrum, aka Jim Dandy, lead vocalist of Black Oak Arkansas in the middle. We go back to 1973. Actually the ex-lead guitarist Harvey Jett is a musician buddy of mine, we have spoken on the phone about business. Jim and Ricky Reynolds have been buddies since high school and are still touring together. Pat Dougherty the bass player makes the occasional appearance. Now here is a band I know something about!

Oglio is selling the vinyl for Goodcharamel or Goodcharamel is selling the vinyl for Oglio?

Who is going to the LA show tonight? I'm wearing my easily identifiable "Broccoli Man" name tag with my "Broccoli Man" picture on it on my Grand Funk Railroad "We're An American Band" rock-n-roll t-shirt.

Oglio is selling the vinyl for Goodcharamel or Goodcharamel is selling the vinyl for Oglio? Good Charamel is managing the US tour on behalf of their artists, so they arranged to get a load of Oglio vinyl in time to sell at shows. How I figure it.

Spiffy!
There's the sparkle Daisy Rock, so you know which continent.
When exactly did they give up the gleaming silver suits for the dark pewter look? I remember they had that for tops, on the last tour of Australia/NZ. But I'm not keeping a Shonen Knife workwear log.
I'm glad of the long version at setlist FM, I was racking my brain for what BATAKA could mean.
So it's one-quarter new release, and three-quarters audience pleasers. How'd they look and sound? I'll be finding out tomorrow, knock wood, but why wait?
I picked up my ticket for Friday night as well, so for a short span I'm following like a lemming.
Tomato-standard rules about photography?
Were Robbie and the Buffalo crowd around?

Nick Waters on the FB site asked me how the show was. Here is the condensed version. Before I post it, I just want to say Lazybone and Rick, it was a pleasure meeting the both of you and hanging out before, during, and after the show. Lazybone is way better at posting pics than I am so I'll let him take care of that angle, at least for now. Here is the quick review: Nick Waters: How was it Eric ? Eric Bierke: Very interesting. Without writing a novel, the girls are very approachable as long as you respect their time and don't hog their attention. I gave Atsuko a San Diego Hash House Harriers ladies t-shirt before the show and when she saw my Broccoli Man name tag her eyes got wide and a huge smile came across her face. I found it odd that the venue (Bootleg Theater) only had two bathrooms for everyone, so when Atsuko and Risa got in line behind the concert-goers, Lazybone looked at me and said "Shouldn't the band members go to the front of the line?" We motioned for them to jump up to the very front, they responded by doing the little Japanese bows of gratitude and thanks. When they took the stage their musical selections (I should have written the songs down, now I forget) were a lot of the bands old songs - Bear Up Bison, Riding the Rocket, Twist Barbie (to be expected), along with songs like Ghost Train, Loop di Loop, Muddy Bubbles Hell, Whatever, Supergirl, and the encore was Banana Chips. They did 4 songs from Adventure: Jump, R&R t-shirt, Wasabi, and Green Tangerine. Atsuko's bass was pumping along with Risa'a drums, giving Naoko some good competition volume wise. Naoko thanked everyone for staying so late to hear their music on a Wednesday night; they didn't start until well after 11:00. After the show they came right out and mingled with everyone signing autographs, but no pictures because of the time limitations. I succeeded in getting "Shonen Knife Land" and the cover of the "Christmas Record For You" autographed I just had to get Naoko's attention and let her know how much joy her music brings to this old man, that she is the John Lennon of Japan, she replied something like "Oh how sweet of you", and like her sister when she saw my Broccoli Man name tag her eyes also got wide and a pleasant little laugh came out of her. Then Atsuko had to grab her away from me because there was a long line of autograph seekers and I was being the attention seeking hog I was talking about earlier. Robbie Takac was not there but Miyoko was manning the merch table; I told her that her fingerprints are on the two Adventure buttons I was wearing and we chatted briefly about her living in New York these days. I'm glad my Japanese friend from the Hash House Harriers showed up because Atsuko and Risa really do not have a good command of the English language; he was pleased to be an interpreter and get to meet the girls that he has known of for so many years from his homeland. He and I and my date all had a really good time. The girls have quite an extensive schedule ahead of them, 31 shows in 36 days. Whew! And that's how it was, the Readers Digest version. Edit: Lazybones set list pic above shows BBQ; due to (me assuming) their time restraints they did not play it. What song is BLS?

Yes, Bad Luck Song, thank you. They did not do that one in LA. But they did do Concrete Animals, and I just thought of another one but by the time I get here I forgot what is was, kind of like having a great idea and you walk into the next room and forget what it was you were walking into that room for. Edit: Ah, Capybara and Like A Cat, thank you Lazybone! One of my purchases was an English version of Fun! Fun! Fun!, something that I have missing from my CD/.mp3 collection. "Good Night" takes on a whole new meaning when you can understand Naoko's beautiful lyrics.

Spiffy! There's the sparkle Daisy Rock, so you know which continent. "When exactly did they give up the gleaming silver suits for the dark pewter look? I remember they had that for tops, on the last tour of Australia/NZ. But I'm not keeping a Shonen Knife workwear log."It was the lighting, or lack of. "Tomato-standard rules about photography?"During the show fine, as well as video. They were really pushed for time, like they HAD to close the doors of the club by a certain city imposed time, so Naoko clearly stated NO PICTURES with the band because the autographing portion of the evening is so time consuming and they wanted to take care of everybody. "Were Robbie and the Buffalo crowd around?"No Robbie, but Miyoko was running the gift shop with precision, vigor, and organization. She speaks very good English, much better than even Naoko. I had a very pleasant conversation with her. Do me a favor? If you get a chance to talk with any of the girls, Miyoko included, mention that you're a buddy of Broccoli Man from LA who was wearing the name tag? I'd LOVE to hear your comments on their reactions to that! They were such sweethearts, so humble and attentive. I really had a good time with them as humans even before the music started. It was nice seeing them smile during the brief little chats we had. AND... I'm sure Rick will be at the merch table buying massive quantities of SK goodies! He has done SD, LA, tonight SF and tomorrow night SJ. Mention a quick hello from the Broc also if you will! You're going to have a blast, enjoy yourself and takes lots of pictures and video; I can't wait to hear your comments on the shows. Who knows, if I get a drive job up that way tomorrow I just might meet you and see the show again!
