I feel somewhat cynical about the setting up of YouTubes "topic" channels... Except, what better way? It's the broadcast radio pay-per-play model in use as long as there's been commercial radio. We spin your thing, you get a penny per spin, and we keep the account ledger, heh, heh, heh. Dammit, I'm afraid that I missed out on the creative accounting lesson at school, so I don't have the answers about the fair reimbursement of artists. I went to the wrong classroom and instead I learned how to eat glue. In the good old days record cafés with gramophones were a major revenue stream for record companies precisely because people didn't have gramophones at home and so didn't buy records. Then when jukeboxes came around, kerching, all those lovely sales to those nice little money earners. Artists will always call out for more money. If enough artists were to spit on the penny that YT was foisting to them and say "I won't take your paltry penny, I'll go and raise poultry instead!", then who knows... But there'll always be more struggling masochists out there, and not all of them are rocket scientists - some of them are drummers. Musicians, there'll always be musicians out there. That sounds like a great business model of Spotify's. "We can't get our business model to work and buy us yachts, so we'll rip you off and tell you to be grateful. Sure, some are grateful, some aren't, and some are very vocal about it. I wish I had the answer to this tricky problem, I'd be on my way to getting seasick on my first yacht. Not a sampler, not a trailer, not a promotional video, just the plain item in trade — first one's free, kid. I think I like this idea... it's a AA single no matter what letter designation they like, so it's not like giving away the whole store. They kind of need to score big this spring. Opportunity isn't necessarily knocking, but it's looking at their door thinking, there's somewhere I haven't been before... The red 7" is history by now, and this YouTube clip may go the same way one day. Meantime, it's a fraction of a penny per discrete play... I would like to hope. They're driving you to Bandcamp for sales, and Spotify for streams. That's a clue, since the release is just as easy to find at iTunes and Apple Music. Making an assumption about Apple Music, I'm not their customer. The 19-second third track is $0.99 just like the other two, and it's shorter in toto than a normal song preview. Our policy is our policy. 〜〜〜 Spotify is looking like a Japanese band's best hope of getting out of the iron box that the major labels and Japan-only download services have built. Although Ototoy is sure trying, at a disadvantage. I say a little prayer for Spotify in the evening. Dear Lord please don't let Google and Apple crush Spotify from above or the rest of the wolves chew them up from underneath, let there be multiple music outlets for a worldwide market, amen. Because the only thing worse than your band having to compete with every other band on Earth is holding that free-for-all in just two cages, McDonald's and Burger King, where music is only a means to the greater end of owning the whole world.

Collected tour pre-launch press noticesDon't have to be good, as long as they're favorable Out of Step: SXSW 2017 Part Two2017 MAR 26 by Brian Audette for "Out of Step" at the Austin OVRLD blog ovrld.com/out-of-step-2/sxsw-2017-part-2/ I can tell you from my own experience that you have not known pure joy until you have seen a Japanese ska band and a Japanese riot grrl band play back to back live…
The set ends with Otoboke Beaver’s guitarist jumping off stage to crowd surf and then climbing the speakers a couple minutes later when the band (having finished early) comes back on stage for a rare SXSW encore. In the end, Otoboke Beaver are all I had hoped they’d be and more. You're stuck looking out through the smeary lens of the writer's own ego, but it's a legit view. Japan’s Otoboke Beaver Release Their Love Is Short EP + Announce UK Tour2017 MAR 30 by Editorial Dept for Entertainment at FLOSS Magazine flossmagazine.com/2017/03/30/japans-otoboke-beaver-release-love-short-ep-announce-uk-tour/ "Love Is Short" sees the band blood-letting a generation’s gender frustration.
"Introduce Me To Your Family" has more vocal playfulness, funky bass and buzzsaw guitar that eventually tumbles into a volcano of noise, with beats tripping over themselves and looks at relationships as a kind of personal war.
"Ikezu (Mean)" at 19 seconds is a stamping flash of anger. Otherwise, it's a cut/paste job made from phrases seen before. Blood-letting as a transitive verb expression whose object is something besides blood. Hold still, I'm gonna blood-let ya. Playfulness that looks at relationships as a kind of personal war — rollicking good time there. Pretty true as far as it goes, though.

OB on NHK-TV in JP on 04/16Otoboke Beaver a few days ago A little overview of the SXSW tour Watch the broadcast on TV 4/16 (Sunday) 10pm ~ BS1 Special "Marvel at the World of Young People ~ The Great SXSW Music and IT Technology Trade Fair"
The link in the tweet is for programming highlights. You can get to a web viewing page from there, but registration is required... and you can't register from out of country. Pop said, http://instagr.am/p/BSYwp7pFx8G Otoboke Beaver's first TV appearance has been determined.
From 10pm on 4/16 (Sunday) an overview of our tour will air in a SXSW special on NHK BS1. In fact, we were interviewed throughout the tour… yikes! 😇 Those who can't watch BS on TV, it seems BS specials can be viewed with the U-NEXT app which is free for the first month, so by all means please watch.
It's embarrassing though… 😇 For me personally, I only appear in the role of drummer, I'm pretty sure. I think you can also see the appearance by watching live at your local live-house.
〜〜〜〜〜 I regret that my local live-house isn't within 6,000 miles of the viewing area. NHK BS1 is satellite digital Channel 101, or 103 for premium content. A mixed-programming Japanese national public television outlet with digital live streams as well as archived video-on-demand. I put the odds of the SXSW documentary being geo-restricted to Japan at about 100%. The U-NEXT content portal is here (base subscription ¥1990/mo, 31-day free trial): video.unext.jp/
I couldn't create an account because I haven't got a Japanese phone number. Game over. Occasionally, not very often, NHK BS live-streams something at UStream: www.ustream.tv/channel/nhk-bs It's possible the SXSW documentary might show up within a week or two on NHK's free TV portal, but I suspect it won't. Not that they haven't got other fun stuff for you: NHK world programming in English: www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/ This example on-demand half hour from 22 March will be available in a Flash-enabled browser for another couple of days: Core Kyoto: Kyo-Kanoko Shibori: Untying the Beauty Bound Withinwww3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/vod/corekyoto/20170323/ Kyo-kanoko shibori is the general term used for tie-dyed fabric made in Kyoto. The bumpy pattern on the fabric's surface is mesmerizing with its delicate shadows… discover the alluring world of Kyo-kanoko shibori through the dexterous hands of passionate artisans.\m/ ROCK 'N' ROLL!!!

Otobi like and retweeted this. A forced move, considering who they are.
I learned for the first time that there's a love hotel with the facetious name of "Otoboke Beaver". These rooms are super-fancy and are completely children's rooms, but what is the level of demand? Are they for playing at being a baby? Some sense of the illicit might be OK, but I don't know, it's unsettling… and the room rates are insanely cheap
Cheap anonymity is the value proposition of Otoboke Beaver the hotel chain. Without that, they don't exist.
Deluxe themed suites for thrilling amateur enactments would be for differentiation from the competing RABU-HO down the block.
Apart from that what is there to say? All you can do else is line up with Otoboke Beaver the band to hurl mockery at this disheartening seamy social mess.
Actually, what am I saying? A cheap place to stay in big-city Japan that isn't a capsule the size of a 75lb washing machine? Bookmark!

Those unique handmade thank-you premiums have been rolling in like the ocean, for SXSW project supporters who live in Japan and donated through CAMPFIRE.
OTOBI-chan's rice bowl and tote being so cute, everyone is looking at them!
When I got home, my tote bag had been delivered from Otoboke Beaver — cute!!
Otoboke Beaver rice bowl arrived ~ ~ ~!!! It has something of an NSG feel, nice. I'll use it!!
"NSG" is shooting over my head, I'm afraid. Not So Good? Nutrition Study Group? It might be a manga doujin or artist I never heard of.
I don't know if I'd use the rice bowls. That's not an enamel glaze, they look like they were colored with paint pens.

Pop in the Olive gardenhttp://instagr.am/p/BTB0shblbes Since I was so happy at the response I got on Twitter, a picture I had taken taken together with Maho-san, four years ago… 😢💕 My actual age is far from that of an Olive Girl, but since my mental age is right around there it was truly an irresistible occasion. Thank you, Mother... . 4 years ago in March was the release of RIOT-113, Mokugeki! LOVE ME SIGN on Teenage Riot Records, independently distributed by the band at gigs. It's a little jarring to think that as they're reposing wrapped in a fluffy pink cloud, best friend Maho is holding up her copy of this shiny anti-personnel device of a CD. Olive what? To know a bit more about Otoboke Beaver, it helps to know something about two decades of the Olive Girl. Olive, "The Magazine for Romantic Girls" was an influential bi-weekly culture bible for teenagers in Japan between 1983 and 〜2003. It advocated fashion and lifestyle choices that appeal to girls as girls — not as girls who are trying to attract boys. Regular Olive columnist Junko Sakai has a book on the subject called The Olive Trap. The publisher's blurb says: " Olive meant liberation from the "battlefield of popularity" [ with males ]. The secret of the passionately adored girls' magazine of that era. The author, an avid Olive reader as well as writer from her schoolgirl days, looks back on the legendary magazine that held girls entranced and influenced her view of life." The Olive Girl's "Love-Ability"2014 AUG 27 by "Olive" Trap (Junko Sakai) for the cakes blog (by subscription) cakes.mu/posts/6773 Cover of Olive Magazine No.34, 1983 NOV 18This is probably a graphic illustration of "girls in love with love". One of the two, Fay, was a popular model with Olive at that time, and a favorite of mine too. I even took pictures with my "fashion rival" friends copying this pose.
This "excessive closeness between girls" is a phenomenon commonly seen in Olive. Because same-sex pseudo-flirtations tend to unfold among virginal girls who know nothing of the opposite sex, such figures were fashionably represented in Olive magazine. She also said that the image of the two tall, inimitable foreign girls gave her a feeling like "it's no use" even today as a middle-aged adult. 〜〜〜 Junko Sakai is a prolific writer, mainly in Japanese social studies. Her bio says she's a lecturer in the English Literature department of Ferris University in Yokohama, and an English Language instructor at Tokyo's Rikkyo University. Women's independence is a major theme with Sakai. Perhaps her most widely-read work is Howl of the Loser-Dog, a book about the social stigma of being Japanese, 30, a woman, and unmarried. There's another one entitled something like Who's a Loser Now? examining the quite contrary underlying economic realities. She's also author of Japanese Bankers in the City of London: Language, Culture and Identity in the Japanese Diaspora, a study based on her observations as a graduate student in '90s London. And a small economics monograph called Notes Toward An Understanding of Capitalist Crisis & Theory. And a shelf of other things as long as your arm.

The SXSW documentary on NHK TV you'll probably never seeI certainly can't find it in their archive or on-demand web library from here... NHK's program writeup for the BS channel blog: www.nhk.or.jp/bs-blog/2000/267471.html ★ BS1 Broadcast Special "The Astounding World of Young People! The Great SXSW Trade Fair" [BS1] April 16 (Sun) Part One: The world in search of indies – Nighttime 10:00~10:50 Part Two: Transforming the world with the latest technology – Nighttime 11:00~11:49Don't feel too bad, Accorinrin missed the broadcast too. Thanks so much to everyone who watched us on BS1〜 I couldn't watch on TV 😢 ❤ so I saw a recording (lol) Meanwhile, we're going great guns on Otoboke Beaver, please support us from here on. 😜 🔥 🔥 🔥 The question from N_K about, "Are you adversaries of the [ major labels ], do you think?" — all of us choked on our words from overthinking, but after I got home I thought "Huh? Did we make light of the question?" and I was regretful. In the first place, major labels and bullshit like that, doubting that it's music, such a Japanese way of thinking really distresses us. It may be related to selling well, but since I was growing up I've felt attracted to the music of people who are not on TV. I don't care at all, I wanted to say that there's a lot of cool music that isn't on TV. 😢 We're still novices for a while yet, but in OtoBi we will make even more fun miracles 🌠 🌠 🌠 🌠 🌠 This isn't a criticism of N_K, I only mean I'm chagrined that there's a part that won't be understood. 🙇 Everybody worked incredibly hard to uncover and communicate our appeal! Watch on TV, okay?❗ From their friend Maruyama of the Maruyama & Kamogawa Quartet. Maru was generous with the praise: About 2/3 of the program was Otoboke Beaver. Bam!! I got a pleasant shock. The end of the program was "Powerful Busu" live, I was laughing lololol Wonderful band. I want them to make the leap overseas right away. Energetic. The greatest!!! The greatest women! Amaaazing〜〜 😊 (Maru) Part of yesterday's NHK special broadcast on BS1… the scene where Otoboke Beaver is sending airmail letters to all of our patrons.❗💌 Thank you all very much once again for your support. 🙇 🙇 🙇 🙇 ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ Yes indeed, I am now reading Assassination Classroom, all soggy and crumpled and crying out loud, 😭 😭 😭 lol. It good that I read it because there were lots of words that are hints for me now. "It's only natural that there are unacceptable things in the world. 😥 If you're resentful or giving up and quitting, 💡 let's enjoy making war on the unacceptable. 🔫 " Ansatsu Kyoushitsu, Assassination Classroom, a wildly successful, award-nominee manga and anime franchise with a peculiar story conceit: The high school homeroom teacher of Class 3-E has been replaced by an invincible, giant, smiley-faced octopoid alien. The alien has already blown away 70% of the moon as a persistent demonstration of its power. It will fulfill its promise to destroy the Earth likewise in one year's time, unless its students can master what it is teaching them about how to kill it. Previously, the tune was more like: Social non-conformists are struggling hard, members of regular society are struggling hard, although it's not going very smoothly. I guess there's no choice but keep trying like nothing happened, right?NHK gave us an interview, it felt like they recognized a little of our style, I'm happy. Because I'm awkward, the simple things are never simple, but be as it may I'm trying rather hard every day of my life. Being in Otoboke Beaver I'm very much living my dream, I'm truly grateful [ for my good fortune ].

The Otoboke Beaver "Love Is Short" record, safely arrived from the UK! Seems it's really coming out… 😭 💕 looking forward to the release on the day after tomorrow!6 hours… I'll be able to sleep for 6 hours… okay… Pop's day and/or night job is in the field of Information and Communications Technology. She's an ICT engineer when not pounding on polyester. She's been idly worrying about whether her travel visa is really in order for the UK. US immigration apparently questioned her suspiciously when she was entering the country for SXSW. You can imagine the agent listening to her story about being in a band and going to exhibit at a trade show, while looking at her paperwork. — You're a professional musician — Right, right, only here a week. Visa waiver. Trade show! – It says here you're an infocomm engineer. — Yes — But you're coming into the country for a music fair? — Yes — … — And that's all? — Yes Immigration may have wondered if she was sneaking into the US to do contract work for a technology company. Pop was like, "What? Can't I be more than one thing?"

Otoboke Beaver's first MV with a storyAnd what a story The link in the tweet is to an article on the video blog for NPR's All Songs Considered: Japanese Punks Otoboke Beaver Take Revenge In A Grindhouse-Inspired Video 2017 April 21 by Lars Gotrich for all songs tv www.npr.org/event/music/524864227/japanese-punks-otoboke-beaver-take-revenge-in-a-grindhouse-inspired-video Go, read. You're going to have to decide what to do with phrases like: — bonkers-noise of early Boredoms — Afrirampo's uninhibited avant-punk — the revved-up garage-rock of Shonen Knife — John Zorn's blistering Naked City
★★★★★ Credit for the best-ever explanation of OtoBi in a single breath: Punk is rarely this charmingly vicious.
Most important, somebody got Accorinrin to talk on the topic of what the hell a song of hers is actually about. That's an historic first as far as I know. "'Being in Love is like a war for me, but what is love?' I expressed this song to say goodbye to unproductive, barren love," says guitarist and vocalist Accorinrin. "It is also a reflection of the anxiety of the marriage promise." “Accorin my dearest, would you make me the happiest man on earth by AAAAAARRRRRGH” Calling it "grindhouse" in a likely reference to Tarantino's idea of fun is a miss. Looks as if the nugget was copy/pasted direct from Damnably, but this MV is the spawn of Japanese hero x rubber monster TV for kids. There are quite a few shots that might as well be direct quotations. Pop will explain: http://instagr.am/p/BTNmYyhlN3m Everybody, have you seen the MV of Otoboke Beaver's "Love is Short"? As a child, I thought it was great to get up at 7am on Sundays not to miss watching Super Sentai stuff.
Here they cut a loud burst of laughter during filming. Mori-san (@shingoel), nice acting, seriously. 〜〜〜〜〜 You don't know low-budget until you've seen this low-budget. Do you suffer from embarrassing loss of autonomy in relationships? The answer is to chase down, fight, and defeat everybody personally. It's what Super Sentai would do. What we see is Accorinrin's vision of a way to fulfillment for the modern girl. おとぼけビ~バ~ ラブ・イズ・ショート Otoboke Beaver – "Love Is Short" (Damnably 2017)2017 APR 22 by Damnably (02:30) Kyoto's Otoboke Beaver おとぼけビ~バ~ are on a path of vengeance in this Grindhouse Cinema-inspired promotional video for their latest single Love Is Short.

Also special favorites for traditional Japanese tattoos. The trouble with this is, they are supposed to be vengeful expressions of female jealousy and rage, waiting to jump the unwary. Also, a hannya mask is considered lucky to have around for protection. So dressing the slave-driving patriarchal male in this costume seems actually a bit off (?).
