MILLENNIUM EDITION (Compilation) Starting the new century with the Knife! 2001 Universal Polydor Records, Canada SK: Naoko & Atsuko Yamano with Michie Nakatani This CD is a compilation of both the hits and some less-known SK recordings, The cover art is the SK logo, thats worn on the band's wristbands, inside is a wonderful mini-poster of Naoko and Atsuko (As this came out shortly after Michie left the band, and before Etsuko) The songs are well-chosen and run the gamut of Shonen Knife music, from the wild and crazy Wild Life to a cover of the Monkees' Daydream Believer. Among the song are several of my favorites from other SK albums such as Cookie Day, ESP, Sushi Bar song and Banana Chips. It also features a very strange piece called TV Commercial Song that might remind one of Yoko Ono's "Number 9 Dream". My fave song on the album is It's a New Find, which was a new find for me, when i bought this CD. Like any compilation, this is a bit of a mish-mash and likely, if you collect SK CDs, you probably have most of these songs elsewhere; whether to buy it , is mainly a decision based on how many of the songs you already have. PS. I don't know if this album was sold only in Canada, or in the USA also. 1/2 Playlist: WILD LIFE COOKIE DAY E.S.P. IT'S A NEW FIND FRUITS & VEGETABLES PEOPLE TRAPS TV COMMERCIAL SONG ONE WEEK SUSHI BAR SONG PUNK ROCK STAR BANANA CHIPS MYSTERIOUS DRUGSTORE DAYDREAM BELIEVER ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS All songs in English, written by Naoko Yamano unless marked otherwise

MILLENNIUM EDITION song review- [glow=red,2,300]WILD LIFE[/glow]
One of the few songs that weren't released on LP CDs here in North America, This rocker is classic SK, basically Naoko's version of what to do on a day off! The band was in top form here....Atsuko uses her drum kit (especially the cymbals) to good effect here. This is my second-fave on this CD

MILLENNIUM EDITION song review- [glow=red,2,300]COOKIE DAY[/glow]
There are 2 versions of this song, one which starts with (I presume) Naoko calling to a dog named "Cookie" , and Cookie answering with a bark, and another Cookie-less version; either way, this is another of SK's trademark "Food Songs" that make them so endearing to their fans (Besides, who SAYS that every song out there, has to be about love anyway?) The song begins "Sugar sugar candy in my mouth....Stay home watch TV...." and the song itself is sugar candy for the ears, no hidden messages, no drama, just a cute song about how a bored Naoko realises the most important goal in her life on a hot lazy day is to eat some cookies, while pondering over the "little things" in life, such as sending a friend a postcard

MILLENNIUM EDITION song review- [glow=red,2,300]E.S.P.[/glow] One of my favorite songs from "Brand New Knife", ESP has some of the best harmonizing the band ever did; and soft but fast guitar playing that blend well with Naoko's voice (Sung a bit softer and at a slightly higher key than her norm); all-in-all a wonderful little song with a great (insane) video that has the frenetic movement of the Ramones "I wanna be sedated" video, along with the band spoofing "Idol singers", science fiction and Japanese monster movies: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5nNemCZVds

MILLENNIUM EDITION song review- [glow=red,2,300]IT'S A NEW FIND[/glow] My favorite song on this CD, this one is exactly why I love SK so much...The band's Joie-de-vivre is combined with a quirky look at how doing something new can enhance your fun! Well, whoever said punk HAS to be depressing? hehe The Video is just as quirky as the song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=astKY3mmDVI&feature=related

MILLENNIUM EDITION song review- [glow=red,2,300]PEOPLE TRAPS[/glow]
This is a song that I need to be in the right mood to listen to...while it has a good beat and some really cool organ playing, the words don't really do it for me...an ok song, just not really to my personal taste.

MILLENNIUM EDITION song review- [glow=red,2,300]TV COMMERCIAL SONG[/glow]
Another in a long line of SK "experimental" songs, this one is... well.... different.... Reminds me a little of Yoko Ono's #9 Dream....only, more techno! (With maybe just a touch of "Perculator Polka" <<Ask your grandparents! )

MILLENNIUM EDITION song review- [glow=red,2,300]ONE WEEK[/glow] Another of SK's story songs, it has a nice bouncy beat and Naoko sings it on the higher range of her voice......the final verse is worth the price of admission!

MILLENNIUM EDITION song review- [glow=red,2,300]SUSHI BAR SONG[/glow]
One of my all-time fave SK food songs.... Sushi Bar (AKA Sushi Bar Song) is one of the best! One of only a handful of SK songs with a male voice on it, it's also one of the fastest, punkiest songs that Naoko ever wrote; seen live in concert, playing this song, in true headbanger fashion , the girls look as if they are going to jam their foreheads into their mics, but, that's what makes this tune so great.....I call it the Hyper-food song!!!! The song's main story is told in English, however, the names of the sushi dishes are yelled out in their Japanese names such as Anago, Uni, Toro, Natto and Unagi.....the last 2 are bean-paste and eel (The others...I have no idea!), then the song goes on to name others; all at a lightning pace, which makes it a great song for the serious headbanger, with a taste for exotic Japanese food! ...ironically, I love this song, but, I personally hate sushi!

MILLENNIUM EDITION song review- [glow=red,2,300]BANANA CHIPS[/glow] My second favorite food song! Banana chips for you, banana chips for me...... A happy, peppy tune that makes everyone I've played it for, smile. The hard-driven guitar and bass lines, not to mention Atsuko's precise drumming, show just how far the band had come from the 712 days. The vocals in this song are Naoko at her very best; and, the video, featuring the girls in Yashimoto Nara style (as on the CD cover of "Happy Hour") CG animation, will blow you away! www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wa95CvhESQ

MILLENNIUM EDITION song review- [glow=red,2,300]MYSTERIOUS DRUGSTORE[/glow]
Atsuko sings this one; co-written by all 3 of the original members, and I think it's one of the best of SK's softer songs ( At-chan's voice works perfectly for this one....She was actually a very good singer!). This song has wonderful harmonies and wonderful music; love it!

The old Monkees song is given the Shonen Knife treatment....and it works nicely, TY.
