I saw Shonen Knife live a few times. I'm a lucky Los Angeles girl. I was in tears of joy watching them and Ats stopped between songs. "Are you OK?"
I had an ear to ear grin. Plus I was air bassing (like air guitar) everything note for note and singing a bunch of Japanese words I have no idea about. She figured I was OK
If you are in LA and Shonen Knife is there I'll be the pointy elbowey small person who eventually makes it to the front row.
Luv Julianne

As soon as we get a photo gallery.
I sent most pics and video to mikado the next day... might have been the next next day.. I had to walk 28 miles home ( in high heels ) from the first time I saw Shonen Knife. I had a ride TO the concert.. but he left 1/2 way through their set. ( Want a ride home? I'm leaving now. ) I chose bye bye.
I tried to catch buses home, but they stopped, and I had to walk. I didn't even know where I was, and I was fairly new to the largest (geographically) city in the USA... so I had to start walking. ( Aimlessly at first... Had to find a road who's name i recognized )
The walk brought me through the absolute worse areas in the city.. crack addicts...pee smelling tunnels I HAD to go through. full of needles etc...and took until 8 AM to get home... So mikado was all worried...and I fell asleep... so it wasn't until the next day.. but I made it ..
If I had been told this was the trial and tribulation I had to go through to see Shonen Knife that first time.. I'd do it all over again.

As soon as the forum room gets set up, I have tons of hi-res pics. I didn't take them.. The guy who left me at the club had 3 mega-pixel camera cell phone cam, front row, and gave me the pics... and a Shonen Knife tour shirt.

Why I've never seen Shonen Knife liveWho is Shonen Knife anyway? As the biggest SK fan in my town and likely the biggest fan in my region (possibly even my province?), you might find it strange to know that I've NEVER seen them "live" (Unless you count watching videos on YouTube). Now, to be perfectly frank, it's not that i don't want to see them, but, more a case of circumstances that prevented me from getting to see them. To begin with, they have been in my area 3 times in the last 15 years, the first time was about a year before I ever heard of them (Sadly , that would have been my last chance to see my fave band-member Michie) , in fact , it was an article in Protoculture Addicts (An anime zine) about that very tour, which was my introduction to the band. I didn't really pay much attention at the time as anime music was my focus re Japanese pop....and i didn't even know about the Osaka-punk sound SK helped create. A few years later, I bought Let's Knife after seeing the "Riding the Rocket" video on MuchMusic and, suddenly, I had a NEW favorite band over the Beatles!!! (Yes, I love them THAT much).....So, I kept my eye out for a new concert tour...and waited.....and waited..... Genki shock tour: Finally, I had my chance to see SK with the Genki Shock tour, I kept going to the Knife Nexus tour page for several months, but, they kept posting "Tour dates to be added soon" and wouldn't you know it, the week they finally WERE posted, I forgot to check.......but, even then, I had a chance to go. Unbeknown to me, my friend Elaine was also an SK fan, and, one Wed night, she gave me a call, they were playing just an hour away in Hamilton!!! The problem was, as SK only seems to do winter tours here (hello....its -20 with 2 feet of snow here) and since I had the worst flu I'd had in 10 years.......I sadly had to decline!!! * (I did get a nice signed tour poster and one of Naoko's signed guitar picks...THANK YOU AGAIN ELAINE! ;D)(* also, I did manage to give Julie the news in time for her to see them in LA) Knife-Dagger 2007 tour:Last year, the Knife toured with Juliet-Dagger on the Knife-Dagger tour....I wasn't really interested in seeing just 1/3 of the original band but, when it was announced that Atsuko WOULD be on the North American tour, my interest in going, was renewed. However, this time, the closest venue was in downtown Toronto, a 75-90 min drive in the best weather, and 2 hours plus in a winter snowstorm.....a lack of funds, coupled with the thought of a long drive alone, in the middle of winter, made me decide to stay home.......and regret it since. HEY SK, HOW ABOUT A SUMMER TOUR?? ( Winter tours and Canada just don't make a lot of sense!)

I remember Mikado telling me he was sick.. and couldn't go to his local show. I knew Shonen Knife was going to be here in 18 or 19 days... so when they were in town I was feeling like a shook up soda pop .. ready to pop...
PPL who have read this forum before please Read on..
I keep saying.. He left me there... "He" was an ex boss.. we'd never been romantic... we played guitars together.. he knew the SK version of day dream believer.. the first time i got to really sing something in years...anyway it was a few years later and SK is in town.. he was all into it.. "really:he was into the gore gore girls ( the bass player at the time was pretty cute)"
Anyway I do my usual "Get to the front of the stage dance,", and Im leaning on the monitors. He's right behind. He get's all kind of cool pics, SK comes out he get's a ton of pics....Then says ..."I'm out. Want a ride?"
thus the adventure I said hell no.. I'll figure my way home... from 26 miles away .. in downtown Los Angeles At 2 AM
I was actually chased by pan handlers yelling for money...
Mikey said next time take a cab... I was new to town and poor I had to walk
I was crying at points... ( the pee smell and needles) and the not knowing I was even walking the right way...
but once again...
in tears and blisters etc... I knew I did the right thing
I saw Shonen Knife from the front row.. and would re-do the night again given the chance.

Genki Shock tour poster (2005 Tara McPherson) This is exactly the same poster that my friend "E" got signed for me at the Knife concert that I had to miss, with the flu!

Just saw on My Space that SK tours US, Europe, UK this year.
Mikado, I hope you get to see them time - it will be well worth it!
Julianne, I would have stayed at the show just like you did.
The first SK show I saw was in 1994. I moved recently to Southern California and got to see them twice in Dec 2007. They get better all the time. Should be great!

Without Michie or Atsuko, I wonder if it would still be worth going, though.

Michie and Atsuko are obviously important members, but I will continue to be a big fan as long as Naoko continues. I was glad that Atsuko was playing with the group on the last couple tours here in '05 and '07. Especially on the west coast, I would hope Atsuko would continue to join Naoko on their tours here. I do enjoy Atsuko's songs in every SK show I've seen.

I have tickets for all 3 nights in the Bay Area. Can't wait. However I could not get Thurs off after the first show. Usually at work at 5:30am. Gonna be late that day for sure.
Anyone else going?

As SK prepares for upcoming 2017 Ramen Adventure Tour in North America, it got me thinking how many total SK shows I've attended. If my math is good, I think the show at LA's Bootleg Theatre on 27 May will be my 24th!
1994 - 1 (Wash D.C. 9:30 club) 1997 - 1 (Wash D.C. 9:30 club) 1998 - 3 (NYC Tower In-Store, NYC Bowery Ballroom, Philadelphia Electric Factory) 2003 - 2 (Brooklyn Southpaw, NYC Knitting Factory) 2007 - 2 (San Diego Casbah, Pomona Glass House) 2009 - 2 (LA Echo, Casbah) 2010 - 3 (Casbah, Hollywood Amoeba In-Store, LA Spaceland) 2011 - 3 (Echo, Casbah, Long Beach Alex's Bar) 2012 - 2 (Alex's Bar, Casbah) 2014 - 2 (Casbah, LA Bootleg Theatre) 2016 - 2 (Casbah, Bootleg Theatre)
Breaking it down by member: Naoko: 23 Ritsuko: 12 Atsuko: 11 Emi: 10 Michie: 5 Etsuko: 4 Mana: 2 Risa: 2
As long as Naoko continues, I'll try and be there! Rock!!
