LET'S KNIFE- Song review- Burning FarmThis is by FAR not one of my faves, it's loud, dissorganized and raucous; however, if you're into the late 60s garage band sound, you may like it! (It's NA NANANANA chorus is familiar, but, I can't think of which 60s song this seems to be copying) ps. if you dissagree, be my guest to give your own review of this song

LET'S KNIFE- Song review- GET THE WOWThis wonderful fast song is surely the most suggestive song SK ever did, featuring such lyrics as "When you open my little box, wowwowwowwowwow, big surprise from me to you, wowwowwowwowwow, give it to you one more time...." and something about "eating honey pie", well , YOU get what I'm talking about....I wonder if Naoko did when she wrote it though!?? haha This is a great song with a good beat and all the great sound of the band, when it was at it's best!

LET'S KNIFE- Song review- MILKY WAY
This is an instrumental that resembles something the Ventures might have done in the early 60s "Beach party" music craze, it's tight and well-played; the Ventures couldn't have done it better!

I came across the Australian release of Let's Knife in a second-hand store today ($5!). (I didn't get it though; bought my copy in Japan)
Same songs on it, but the cover art was something I've never seen before – the band standing against a blue background wearing hats with these fluffy things on 'em, and then inside they're wearing these kerrrr-azy psychedelic colourful costumes with flowers and beads and whatnot.
Trippy!

I enjoyed reading your review Mikado.Thankyou. I just bought this cd about two years ago.Had I gotten it when it came out,I would have bought every cd sk came out with and seen them on tour every year. However, that was not to be. They say a producer can make an average band very good.Well they made a great band the best they could be.Turning these raw songs into classics. Wachin girl is brilliant, right up to the final chorusThis, and Butterfly collector are my favorites here. I also like the electric turned into acoustic guitar on I am a cat.Two great ones back to back. I think they could have left out the live stuff. This is like a greatest hits. How about a review of Free Time,or a more recent one?I think free time is as good as any previous sk records. Better than Supergroup and equal to Genke shock imo. .

I'm glad you liked my review; I'm not a musical professional, I just give my impressions, from the point of view of a typical SK fan Yes I agree that a great band was made better, it's pretty much how I began the review As for Free Time, Julianne has already reviewed the album, however. I have been planning to add my own 2 cents about that album; and like you, I think it's among their best albums EVER!

Trippy! Yeah, it seems what you get depends on where you live... I guess there must be Knife collectors out there, who try to collect each album cover There are plenty of good and not-so-good commercial reasons for different album art in different markets. A Director-of-Something for Virgin Records, licensor to Creation Records, parent of August Records, distributor of indie greats like My Bloody Valentine and Shonen Knife... decided that Victorian hippies in maribou were what the UK and Western Europe needed. Naoko seems to be sporting a stupendous brassiere straight from the showroom at Frederick's of Hollywood. Imagine the photographer, an assistant, and a costumer making the girls stand there patiently till the composition looks just so. Then they click off this frame that flatters Naoko only, and it becomes the album front. Either they never thought the shot would make the grade, or they were fast asleep, or they were mistakenly relying on the re-touch department -- because that shadow under Atsuko's lip is pretty inexcusable. Whatever. The bigger to-do about the UK release behind this artwork: early production was of a two-disc set. Both CD and LP had a companion recording of album cuts minus the vocal tracks. Yes! SK karaoke, for Britannia exclusively. And for me too, because innocently I got my hands on a copy of that second disc.

Suntan, you are SO right about the pic being flattering to Naoko only (Despite the ridiculous bra): Poor Michie looks fat and miserable and Atsuko appears to be wearing a "soul patch" beard (the shadow you mentioned). All in all, the pic on the American/Canadian version of the album is much cuter!

I kinda like both versions of the covers, despite them both looking like rush jobs. Some days I prefer the one cover, another day I prefer the other one. Though I feel they should have used the inner picture of the UK release as the album cover, but even that one doesn't do them too many favours. Again Naoko comes out the best by far. The pic below is from the CD release, for the vinyl release the pic is monochrome. As for the Karaoke disc, hmm, the songs sound so much better when Shonen Knife sing along with me rather than when I try and do the vocals solo. Though the people on the bus never know which version it is that I'm singing when I've got my headphones on. Mikado, how dare you say that Michie looks fat and miserable! Demure, but sultry is more like it. Though Atsuko looks a bit skinny in the UK pics. I keep wondering if there is any real significance to the way that they are holding their hands on the feathery cover. And what about the colours of their feathers, complicated by the fact that Naoko's wearing them in two colours? And what sort of shoes is Naoko wearing to go with her boa bra? Michie's got those cute OL shoes, Atsuko's got dominatrix boots, but Naoko...? Pesky writing getting in the way of Naoko's legs.

So true that flower-power mod with balloons and stuffed toys is more their style at the time, and the band seems to agree.
They're still just doing as told to. "Is this what you want? Cookie Monster higher?"
I think this photo does Michie some justice, you understand that she is actually wicked playful.
But somebody plastered a pink smiley right on Naoko's crotch. Can you imagine?
"Vanessa, love, just turn the smile badge so it shows. No, not working yet. Well, tape it on, then. No, toward me more. Center it. Yes, I know, that's the point isn't it? Thanks, Naoko, there's a dear. Smile, everyone!!"
Then the crotch decoration gets the shot kicked off the front cover. No wonder Naoko's expression seems to say, seriously?
And did they airbrush the blue barber-pole stripes onto the hosiery? Kind of looks like.

American/Canadian cover art Arguably SK's best album cover ever My reaction when I saw this for the first time was awe at how the garishness had been calculated, refined, and balanced to a hair. My next thought was, "Penguins... wearing headbands!"
