I thought I'd begin with a review for the animated version of my favorite manga.......you may have read this review elsewhere as wrote it over 5 years ago for an online review page....well, here it is again! lol [glow=red,2,300]VIDEO GIRL AI[/glow] Six part OAV series ViZ Video (USA/Canada) My favorite manga brought to life...but only to a pointA lonely and dateless guy puts a video date cassette in his VCR and a beautiful, high spirited girl with few inhibitions, comes out of his TV..everyman's dream, or a nightmare of complications? This is the main plot of VGA, litterally about Ai a "Video date girl" who comes into the lonely and broken-hearted "dateless" Yota's life (via the VCR) and turns it upside down! The anime tends to emphasize the romantic parts of the story, but, much of the comedy (from the original manga) was left intact, such as Ai's first barfmaking attempts to cook; you see, she was played in a broken VCR and the "perfect" Video Girl ( Read: No emotions, great cook and made just to please men in a robotic way ) has been turned into an IMperfect one: Lively, mischievous and with the abillity to love! In other words, the love doll is now a typical girl and Yota falls for her charms, unfortunately, if Ai falls in love, or is loved, her fate is sealed, she has to be erased! The art follows the manga fairly nicely and as usual, Megumi Hayashibara gives an A+ performance as AI...In fact, I consider this her greatest performance ever as AI goes through all emotions in this series. Actually, the acting is superb all around and this anime will please any fan of romantic comedy. Now for the only "fly in the ointment"; as I hinted, it follows the books to a point, book 3, to be exact; unfortunately, they never got past that point in the anime, oh well, what there is of "VGA the anime" is well worth watching if you love romantic comedy, also, there's an OMAKE theatre just for fun at the end of every episode! Warning, some of the Omake gags might offend as they are far from politically correct!!! Video Girl Ai....the anime is worth the price, but the manga's better! (of 5) Look for: Another amazing performance by Megumi H (although, you won't get to hear her singing here, sadly); Weeeeeeeird hairstyles; Hyper-beautiful actress/model/singer Noriko Sakai ,who sings the theme songs and makes a live appearance in the final live "extras" segment of the OAVs. Look OUT for: Politically incorrect Omake Theatre; sometimes stilted animation.

BAD anime review #1 ;D [glow=red,2,300]THE ULTIMATE TEACHER[/glow].....Simply the worst anime I've ever seen!! (Well, with the possible exception of Fooly Cooly) OAV, 60 mins There's a good chance you won't even find this title anywhere, as it only came out on VHS in 1993 (though it came out in 1988 in Japan), and it's long out of print, however, you may be tempted to buy it used when you see the cover pic of a hot girl barely wearing tight black shorts and a tank top thats been ripped to just about the limit of decency and, up in the sky, a giant creepy man who seems to be about to grab her......sounds interesting? Well, for starters, the girl in the pic ISN'T the teacher, she is however,Hinako Shiratori, a student and the leader of the teenage gang who've taken over the school, the Ultimate teacher is the creepy guy, who's been hired to try and stop her! Both of them have a secret, she wears a pair of magic panties that give her superhuman strenght , and he turns into a kind of Bio-engineered spiderlegged half-human. However, he only uses this as a last resort when it's looking as if he will never manage to grab her panties.......that's right, the main plot of this anime revolves around a 40 year old mutant trying to steal a 16 year old student's panties! (But for a good cause, to save the school from her evil!) Does this sound as moronic to you as it does me? Well, it's even worse, this one-joke idea goes on for a full hour! (In the end, she manages to get her panties back and defeat the teacher, but, chances are you won't really care, by this point) Seriously, if you ever find this VHS for $1 at a garage sale, buy it, keep the cover art, and destroy the tape inside!!!......$1 is a cheap price to pay, to rid the World of an anime that should never have left the drawing boards, in the first place!!!! out of 5 smileys Look for: Great sexy cover art Look OUT for: Everything else about this anime, cause this sucks more than a souped-up Hoover !!!

ALL PURPOSE CULTURAL CAT-GIRL NUKU-NUKU 6 part OAV series ; by King Movic (Japan) & AD Vision (USA)The first OAV series I ever bought! What do YOU do with YOUR leftover cat brains? Well, for semi-mad scientist Natsume Kyuusaku, the answer is, build a super-powered older sister, for your only son, then let her loose on Tokyo....even Godzilla would be impressed! It all begins on Xmas-eve, as Kyuusaku escapes with his son Ryuunosuke, from the clutches of his wife's family business (Which happens to be heavy arms manufacturing), also taking with him a secret : An unfinished robot prototype. Unfortunately for him, his wife Akiko has already caught on and sends her 2 insane lackeys ( Arisa & Kyouko) to hunt him down (and get back her only son), in the lethal Poison One attack helicopter. During a break in the chase, Kyuusaku offers his son an Xmas present, a barrel of KFC (!!), Ryuunosuke in the meantime, decides to pick up a present of his own, a stray cat, which soon gets caught in the crossfire; thus ends Nuku-Nuku's 1rst of her nine lives. Cut to a year later and now Nuku is a beautiful 17 yr old schoolgirl with a 900 HP artificial body........and the brain of a dead cat! (For instance, she enjoys chasing mice and bugs, and, while she LOOKS human, is still attracted to handsome male cats!!!) This is an amusing slapstick comedy that features a cat-brained cyborg becoming her "little brother's" bodybguard in the wild custody battle between his parents...who often fire live bazookas at each other! The fun continues as Nuku-Nuku learns about human life and her amazing body. This is a very old VHS OVA series (1982), however, it did come out later, on DVD; also, if you ever find it, buy it, you won't find any emo characters, but, if you like to laugh, it will do the trick! 1/2 out of 5 Look for: Another amazing performance by Megumi Hayashibara, who plays Nuku Nuku and does all the theme songs; beautiful art in the first 3 stories (that goes downhill in the last 3;) hilariously silly situations & Nuku's "Cat's ears" that usually hide under her hair, until she's upset, when they mecanically pop out. Look OUT for:Old school animation, "cartoon" violence, mild fan service and availability issues

[glow=red,2,300]SLAYERS[/glow] (The first 3 seasons) Funimation/Enoki TV (12 disc set) A Magical blast from the past!Recently, this hit series from the 90s has been revived, and this is no longer a collection of the full series; it is however a complete collection of the original series; and whether you are an old fan , or, wondering which old school anime you may want to try, this is a series with something for everyone (Well, there isn't that much senseless violence or nudity but, there's everything else) The story takes place in a fictional World, set permanently in medieval times; a place where the entire known World knows the name of "LINA INVERSE, THE SORCERY GENIUS", as the small but gutsy Lina (Played by the great Megumi Hayashibara) calls herself (OR Lina the dragon spooker, to everyone else). Lina spends her time travelling the World , eating drinking and stealing from bandits (She feels she isn't doing anything wrong, so long as she doesn't steal from honest people); however, when some of her bandit victims manage to chase her down, she's saved in the nick of time by a brainless but talented swordsman named Gourry Gabriev; who becomes her travelling partner. The main plot of the series is Lina's quest for a "legendary" manuscript of powerful magic known as "The Claire Bible" (And with her attempts to get ahold of Gourry's magic sword of light); on the way, they meet up with both villain and foe trying also, to get their hands on the document.I won't go into the various characters, why ruin it for you? Suffice to say, that with each season, Lina must upgrade her power as the evil that she must fight, becomes more and more dangerous, and the Claire Bible is the key to saving the World! out of 5 Look for: Swordfighting, comedy, magic, quirky characters, plot twists and great voice acting. (Every theme song to every season is sung by Megumi herself). Look out for: Some brief nudity, the death of some minor characters, some mild violence

Haha, Ultimate Teacher! I rented that back when I was at uni. Not the most cerebral anime ever made, it has to be said. It probably holds the record for most frequent use of the word 'panties' in its English dub.

I watched it in Japanese with subtitles, and for once, it can be said that watching an anime in the original Japanese, didn't improve it a BIT!

Sometimes an anime's lameness only shows itself in the English dub. For the most part though, I have no problems with English dubs, unless they start changing Japanese cultural references. Having hardened Tokyo cops talking in terms of 'dollars' is just wrong.

I can't stand dubbed anime, I had a lot of it back in the days when ALL you could get was dubbed VHS; I litterally can't watch it now, the TERRIBLE American voice acting grates soooo much!

I don't really mind it - except when they throw in references to dollars, and California, and words like "dude" and "yo" and all that rubbish. I'm looking at you, Pokemon.

Well, for ME, just the fact that in the Eng DUBS, 90% of the characters can't even properly pronounce their own names, FFS, is enough to turn me off of dubbed anime.... if they keep their original Japanese names at ALL!

Wouldn't it be cool if the English dubbers got Asian voice actors living in America to do the roles?

(haha) The only major Asian-American voice actress I can think of who does an Asian accent in some animation, is the beautiful Lauren Tom, who played Min on King of the Hill and played both Amy Wong and her Mother on Futurama
