I dont get how anybody can get confused with the members of Shonen Knife ? Pete 712 Well, if you look at Michie on the blue pic (the comparison post) and then look at Naoko, with short hair in the cowboy hat; one could easily confuse them as the same person; particularly if you'd never seen them in person

I always thought this is the worst SK album, but that doesn't mean it's not bad. I love the songs Buggy Bug, Punk Rock Star, and Chinese Disco. And the rest of the album is just ok, imo.

Haha isn't it cute how they drew in Naoko's favorite guitar? I have heard a few of these tracks (I used to have some on MP3s before my old computer crashed and burned) Buggy Bug: I like it Wild Life: Love it Punk Rock Star: Like it Sesami: Didn't like it when i first heard it, but, it grew on me Chinese Disco: Don't like it at ALL Mayonnaise Addiction: Haven't heard it in 2 years, but, love it PS... Pete you forgot to give the CD the number of smileys, out of 5 You've never listened to the whole album? I was going to give you a download link, but unfortunately, megaupload was shut down by the government. I'm lucky I downloaded that before the site disappeared! Anyway, I'll upload the album to YouTube soon, so you can hear the whole thing!

Yeah, I found a copy in Toronto, but, since it was never officially released in Canada, I would have had to pay the "import" fee; and , I really didn't want to spend the $80 they wanted, for an album that had a bad rep! lol

I hate to resurrect an old thread, but I'm just now listening to it. Mosquito's to be exact. I love it! Maybe I'm just a very patient man or because I can find no fault with these wonderful women.

I hate to resurrect an old thread, but I'm just now listening to it.. Solid record in my humble-ish opinion. It fails on arrangements, if at all. It's mining the same lode as always, but it has great hooks, out-of-nowhere ideas, and fun jokes. "Buggy Bug" is a slightly lame start to me... only, it's blistering in spots! If they didn't already have an unwieldy-huge catalog, SK could easily dig out "Wild Life", "Sesame", others for live shows. Oooh, good idea for change-ups. You hear a lot of directions that got developed big-time further on. I think the reception to this might have been one reason Naoko turned away from keyboard synths and became exclusively a guitar-slinger. But really, her little experiments were not at all shabby.

You're not resurrecting an old thread, there is no such thing as an old thread on this forum. Some may go dormant for a while, but by no means are they old and dead or to be left alone, some may just be a little dusty that's all. So by all means keep doing it. I love this album and it gets a lot of playing. There are some absolutely cracking songs on it, and a nice helping of fun. This is one of the SK albums that seems to be a bit more difficult to get your hands on as it was only released in Japan. When I asked Naoko to sign my copy for me, she told me that it is a very rare CD and asked me how I had got my hands on it. I'd ordered my copy from Japan thanks to internet shopping and a fair bit of looking until I found a new copy at a reasonable price. I've seen copies advertised for eye-watering amounts of silly money. Obviously I also got the lovely merch girl to sign it for me. Yay! With songs which include lines in the lyrics such as "I killed a bug today 'cos it ate my chocolate bar" (Buggy Bug), or "I am the mosquito sacrifice" (during the intro to Mosquitoes which has China credited on drums for this track). There's a hell of a lot to like here. It starts with a song only 9 seconds long called "Side 1", later there's another slightly shorter song called "Side 2", and the album finishes with the slightly longer out-take, "Side arey" (or however it's spelled) which is accompanied by giggles... What's not to love about this album? Nothing as far as I'm concerned, its another beauty. I don't understand why some lunatics don't seem to like it - they must be demented. Perhaps everyone was just missing Michie.

Congratulations on the ownership of this rare CD, I'll be keeping my eyes out for a copy now. YouTube only has one upload of it with no comments having been made, AND only 9 of the songs. RIPOFF!! Oh well. AND...more congratulations to you on getting the sisters and the merch gal to autograph it for you! Would like to linger, but have to go to work. Sunday night work, ah yes... I'll finish this later.

As Glor said, resurrect any thread you like, I made that rule, so, it's fine! Yes, after that lousy rep this album got, I didn't buy it either and now I sort of regret it... but, $80 cause it was an import? ?? YIKES All in all, I think that likely, there were 3 reasons that it bombed: 1) No Michie 2) Very experimental and likely turned off a lot of fans 3) Lack of promotion: This album came out at about the time Naoko had Emma; and SK didn't go on tour very much, for awhile.

I have time to part a quickie: I just went on Amazon.com and there are several copies for sale. They're all imports from what my very brief perusal came up with. A lot of $7.95's plus shipping. I don't think it's all that rare.

I don't think it's all that rare. Times have changed. A year ago, you might have been lucky to find one copy from Samurai Media for the kind of money Mikado remembers. There was almost no JP Amazon-affiliated store that would ship outside of Japan. But lately, I see used JP import CDs for sale to the US for a dollar or two. Seems like a lot of former restrictions on entertainment media from JP went away in the last 12 months or so. That and a strong US dollar means I've been partying pretty hard of late...

Well, that brings up a possible issue that I have yet to run in to - import fees and international handling. This was the American Amazon site I briefly looked at, and it says the shipping fees were something like $3.99. I find that hard to believe, plus the $7.95 cost for a used CD, that seems really cheap. They also have pricier ones available, they say brand new which to me means never opened, which means there are copies out there duo it's not as rare as one might think.
I'm on the road, have to sleep in the van tonight. See y'all tomorrow!

It does rather depend on what you mean by rare. It could be that every home in Japan has at least two copies Strawberry Sound and they are really common over there, but it is often different in other parts of the world. She may have just meant that (at the time) the album was rare outside of Japan, rather than that there were not many copies released. A few years ago, SK brought a handful of copies to the UK for their merch table. They were selling them for something like £50. As far as I was concerned, it just felt like Strawberry Sound was difficult to buy outside of Japan. Where I live, penguins are very rare. I don't know if its the same where you live, but apparently Antartica is full of them. As Mikado said, it wasn't too long ago that you'd occasionally see used copies listed on Amazon for $80 and upwards, and seldom being listed for sale on English language sites. For a while everyone seemed to be listing Strawberry Sound at those sorts of prices - and frequently for prices much higher. But you'd often find that while the CD might be listed as being for sale and also with a very reasonable shipping cost, if you actually tried to buy the CD from one of the Japanese suppliers, then a nice little message would pop up which said that it wouldn't ship to your destination. I used to find that happening very frequently. It probably took me dozens of attempts to buy this album with many occasions of excitement rapidly turning to disappointment before I was eventually successful. That was a few years ago now. Like Tan said, times have changed and restrictions have eased on media items from Japan so things have become much more readily available of late, with many more sellers able and willing to ship items to overseas destinations. There used to be very restrictive laws in Japan to prevent exports like this from happening, but sometimes things still seeped out. This change has been particularly noticeable over the last year or so and some real bargains are coming up at very sensible prices. Japanese sellers have recently even started listing (what were rarities) on eBay and they are prepared to ship items abroad, something which never used to happen. I've seen the new SHM CDs listed on eBay by a Japanese seller, which again is the sort of thing you never used to see - new Japanese releases direct from Japanese sellers used to be only a dream. I'd often have to look for Japanese releases being shipped from sellers in Hong Kong or Australia but with limited success.
