Anyone heard BABYMETAL? They're an idol pop group, but with proper heavy guitars. I've liked them for a couple of years now, but just recently they seem to have exploded! Their recent single "Gimme Chocolate" went viral, and has had nearly 8 million views in 2 months. Gimme Chocolate: youtu.be/WIKqgE4BwAYDoki Doki Morning: youtu.be/cirhQ8iLdbwHeadbanger!!: youtu.be/2IzR_ClTE8YI've just bought my ticket to see them at the London Forum, UK in July (It says Electric Ballroom on the pic, but they had to move to a bigger venue, due to high demand for the tickets). They're also playing Sonisphere Festival, and dates in Paris and Cologne. Check em out if you haven't already!

Oh yes, they're a guilty pleasure of mine. I particularly like Doki Doki Morning, and Headbanger
But I don't know about me going to see them. Me and big gigs don't really mix well, and the Forum has a capacity of 2100 sweaty oiks. But I'm sure that they'll put on a great show, and seeing them doing their "running dance" and then head-banging 'till they need neck-braces should be lots of fun.

Certainly they're a debatable group on many levels... Musically, they are just not interesting enough, in my opinion. The metal parts are very safe and don't stand out as sounding different from any modern mainstream metal act, and the electro-infused J-Pop has never appealed to me at all, from any artist really. As an idea, it's compelling to watch and listen to, but the result for me is half-baked and ever-so-sightly disturbing.
But perhaps the thing that disturbs me the most is not their age and it's relation to the music they sing to, but the idea that they are a completely manufactured group of kids, who, from many sources i've read, have no interest - in fact, actively dislike - heavy metal music.
While I accept that commercialism, and the music business model should have zero impact on anyone's own enjoyment in listening to any sort of music, my inner snob protests against any group who does not have total enjoyment and interest in the songs they are putting out. There is much beyond the music that really gives me the creeps on this one.

Metal Hammer Magazine's Dom Lawson has this to say about them; I agree with him wholeheartedly! youtu.be/0xi0x-72zmA

A co-worker introduced me to Babymetal a few months ago. They rule and they should tour with Shonen Knife and Mikabomb!

I got the Babymetal CD about a month ago - pretty good! They play here in LA Sunday night and I thought about going but decided to pass this time around. But I'm really looking forward to seeing Shonen Knife in October and then electro-pop fave Perfume in November though:)

I was trying to explain Babymetal to a friend, and this is what I could come up with.
Yes, they’re a marketing concept band; yes, they’re a pushmi-pullyu and a kind of joke and their name is a pun; yes, they’re fully packaged, trained and domesticated; yes, they are a contradiction that can’t be sustained… and when it resolves, the band is finished. Yes, it’s ultimately a boring idea.
But as of recently, they still bring it.
Here’s the metal:
3:54 of Babymetal Death, then shredding excerpts.
But you won’t see Mikio Fujioka. Maybe the most interesting player, not quite a core member.
And here is the baby:
Recording, choreography, performance from 2010 Yui and Moa were 10 years old. One sign of talent: I can't decide who's most fun to watch.
Slight to Fujioka amply repaired, for 51 minutes
BABYMETAL - KAMI BAND Mikio Fujioka
A big, BIG old guitar geek. The extracurricular jamming starts about 22 minutes in.

Heading for Germany, now. I know you want to catch them in August at either Reading or Leeds, so good luck with that. This is from their stop in Toronto twelve days ago. Onedari Daisakusen by Babymetal live Toronto May 12, 2015Upped by Glenn Poirier (balcony shaky-cam, audio so-so but OK) Live report on the date for the Project: Lixx blog by James C. Steward It’s 10X more enjoyable with a good handle on the lyrics: Music: Babymetal - Onedari Daisakusen (English Subtitle)Upped and subtitles by PhantomSniper13 PhantomSniper13’s other subtitling jobs also deserve your attention. But for some reason, he does “oni-san” as “tagger” when it should be “ogre” (Catch Me If You Can). The song is a spin on a children’s game similar to blind man’s buff… not about graffiti bombing as far as I know…

Change of pace. Like the previous video, this would be from the 2012-13 timespan. Phantom Sniper 13 may be working from rips of concert DVDs, I couldn't say. Babymetal — 紅月 (Akatsuki, “Crimson Moon”) (English Subtitles)Upped by PhantomSniper13 Akatsuki is a girl's name. Also the term for an actual reddish moon, especially one that's sinking into The Darkness Before Dawn, bwahahaha. You think Babymetal is all about joining hands, squealing, and excitedly plunging into that same darkness, to return as its disturbing, chocolate-loving servant. And it is, it is… but let’s not forget deathless love or having your heartstrings first tugged and then ripped out. Suzuka renders her first show-stopper. Anybody with proper feelings should go cry the ink off a whole journal entry. The subtitles help, but here's a translation with notes by Jean-François Cloutier at babymetal.net, and here’s a full lyric sheet. There are several different renditions of this song on the Web; it’s poetry, right? So you can interpret. Have fun. \m/

BABYMETAL 2015 This is 6 or so months old. If you haven't looked at BabyMetal since their 2014 tour, you'll probably notice two things about this press pic. (1) Not quite as metal; it's the old props, but the set leans toward straight vampire gothic, and (2) Not as baby either, since a year is a long time in your adolescence!

Your irregular periodic awareness update: The velvet drapes can't possibly fall on you, they said. We're riggers, trust us, they said. Background art above for BABYMETAL's latest, Metal Resistance.
12 audio tracks, available on preorder from AMUSE Inc. for April 1st release at iTunes, etc., and as an LP, CD, or Deluxe Limited Box Set. The leading single KARATE can be yours on the download services now. It's a vaulting J-pop anthem with processed vocals, stuttering tom-toms, and a sing-along chorus. 〜〜〜〜〜 The metal babies evolved from mischievous little goth dancing dolls, to inimical kitsune foxen who will lead you seriously astray, to baby vampires — and that's where their performance garb seems to have settled — but aspirational image-wise they've progressed. From youthful but fully undead New Orleans-style victorian vampires, to… it looks like, Princesses of Mordor. Better not get involved with. Already appropriately satirized by, um, diehard fan gokai_blue at Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/p/BCurrhEgo9I
