Part 5 Packards that could have been and the last Packards that were: The plan was to bring back the BIG Packard for 1957, designs were drawn' concept cars built and clay models readied....and it was all for nothing! The first idea car was the Packard Request, built to test the Public reaction after a call to bring back the classic Ox-yoke grill, by several Packard owners.... this car was basically a '55 sedan with a hand-made art deco style grill, the car still exists. How successful was the design? It's a matter of taste (I like it) screenshot program windowsThe next step was to finalise the design of the new BIG Packard, the new car was to have massive fins, a kind of sail-like roofline, the vertical grill and hidden headlamps, soon, a showcar replica was built (though, smaller and shorter than the planned car), named the Predictor. It was a hit, and confirmed the company's feeling that they were headed in the right direction. screen capture windowsAlso in the planning stages, was an all-new Studebaker-based Clipper (as it turned out, the '57 Clipper WAS Studebaker-based, but, it would be less than all-new) photo hosting softwareSadly, when a clay model was made for the 57 Big Packard, they chose a very pedestrian sedan design, known as the Black Bess, the car lost most of the panache of the Predictor, and, with it's quad headlights (The covered lights were eliminated) and grill, it looked more like the upcoming '58 Edsel, than it did the showcar! When the bankers decided to pull the plug on Packard,Bess was cut into pieces and one "wag" quipped "It's just as well, the clay model was so ugly that we'd have had to blindfold them, to show it." image hosting 12mb

No problem, this is a car thread, with no real rules, posting your car is fine I have no idea what Miata means, but, it sounds better than Eunos looks as if your car is in pretty good shape for a 1992

I was relieved. Miata is likely to mean "reward", "compliment" or "praise". Details are unknown, Miata is not used in the current MX-5 seems there is a feminine image. Eunos is the dealer name MAZDA has new brand development in Japan in the 1990s. However, it becomes only MAZDA dealers due to the economic downturn then, Eunos dealers disappeared.

The incredibly ugly Hanomag Kommissbrot , the car many believe inspired Prof, Porsche to create the VW; ironically, later Hanomags seemed to have been inspired by the VW! Attachments:

THE PACKARD STORY... FINAL CHAPTER: When Packard President James Nance bought Studebaker at the suggestion of his friend, American Motors Pres George Mason, little did he know he'd signed the company's death warrant. The plan was to add Packard and Studebaker to Nash and Hudson to make a multi-line car company to compete with the "Big 3" (GM, Ford & Chrysler); but, sadly, Mason suddenly died and his successor George Romney claimed to know nothing of the proposed merger (Romney had been Mason's "Right hand man" for years, so, it's likely he knew of the latter's plans, but, he decided instead to scrap the big Nashes and Hudsons and concentrate on his successful economy car, the Rambler); leaving Nance with a huge albatross clinging to Packard's neck....sucking it dry of cash, and ultimately killing the planned BIG 57 Packard line... There was a Packard Clipper in 1957 and 1958, but it was really a Studebaker in disguise; earning it the derisive name of "Packardbaker" from traditional Packard buyers. When Dick Teague (Now working, ironically at American Motors /Rambler) , designer of the 56 &57 Packards saw the result he quipped: "When I saw my beautiful Packard taillights on that tired old Studebaker body, it was enough to make a maggot vomit!" And that pretty much says it all! Studebaker lived on until 1966, when the last one came off the line in Hamilton Ont. Canada Attachments:

;D I had, for the sake of sheer mischief, thought of posting this in the automobile thread. But it's not about a car. It's engine doesn't burn petrol or diesel. Though it does have an internal combustion engine. He-he-he, I'll throw a motorcycle in here. It is a Dnepr, which is a Ukrainian motorcycle built in Kiev. It has a 650cc 45hp engine that this guy from Belarus has converted to be fuelled by wood. Yes, wood. This video is rather sedately paced, rather like Dneprs are, with the bloke going through the full rigmarole of putting wood in it and then firing it up and eventually going for a ride. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RimEDBud1z0This "gasifier" technology isn't a new idea, here is a slide-show of cars, lorries and buses and even a tank in the 1940s, all fuelled by wood gas. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKFQySeIlHYI eventually got to the automobile part of the thread Attachments:

In the late 20s, a promoter called Archie Andrews (!) brought out what was arguably the most beautiful automobile ever built, the front wheel drive Ruxton. Several Ruxtons had a beautiful rainbow paint job, created just for it; sadly, only about 50 cars were ever built Attachments:
