One thing to get the Shonen Knife sound is to run Distortion with a pedal and Some Echo for songs like Devil House. Naoko and Ritsuko also run a Boss Chromatic tuner and I love after each song they go through the strings and check. Some real Guitar Nazi's dont like Pedals but I find them Fun to use and Love when Bands Like shonen Knife use a plank or metal case instead of the profession Boards. Naoko uses an Altoids tin on her boards to hold guitar picks too. Ive added Altoid tins to all my pedal boards as a Shonen Knife tribute to Naoko ! What exactly does a pedal board do? I have a rough idea; but, specifically, what way does it change the sound of a guitar?

Shonen Knife songs all have a special sound..First its using a humbucker pickup which Naoko uses on all her guitars...Next is adding effects with a pedal board... The first pedal is an over drive ...basically boosting the audio out of the guitar..Next is a distortion pedal.. Basically taking the signal and breaking up the peaks of the waveform produced...It makes the buzzing chain saw sound...That Ramones thing !!! Later switching in and out an echo box for some songs ..Last is a tuner... Noako loves to retune her guitar after every song..this is done by checking each string to the meter on the box...Usually checking the High and Low E strings.... Its amusing that she does this but I love that she does it too!
Hope this helps becoming a real Naoko Nut !
I have 3 pedal Boards...1 for Shonen Knife songs 1 for Instrumental surf and the other is the basic Rock N Roll stuff...
